2013 Home runs remain an issue for Below and may have led to his demotion from the big club in mid-August. He gave up five in six appearances from July 3 to August 13 after having allowed only one in 21 appearances prior to that. The issue continued in Triple-A as he allowed three in four starts spanning 17 innings to close out the season. He has more control than command, so he stays in the zone and avoids walks, but he doesn’t have the kind of stuff that can live in the zone without getting hammered. He will likely vacillate between Detroit and Toledo as a 25th-26th man type, papering over injuries in the bullpen, grabbing a spot start here and there, or being the first arm up when a doubleheader follows a 15-inning game.
2012 Two years removed from Tommy John surgery, Below has recovered nicely and last year toted his four-pitch repertoire to The Show, with mixed results. There’s not a lot of swing-and-miss in his arsenal: a straight fastball that tops out in the low 90s, average breaking stuff, and a deceptive delivery. If that smells like a swingman to you, then you’re an acute observer of the pitching condition. Below will be in the mix for the fifth starter job but will likely work in long relief, where his stuff might play better in shorter stints.
2011 Duane Below made a surprisingly quick recovery from Tommy John surgery, and found enough of his power-lefty mojo in Double-A for the team to stash him on the 40-man.
2010 Duane Below was the Tigers' minor league pitcher of the year in 2007, but had to get TJ surgery just two starts after being promoted to Double-A.

2012-01-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that Detroit has blown a gigantic wad on Prince Fielder, are they going to rely on Jacob Turner as their 5th starter? I don't see anyone else decent who is around to back him up. . . And, if Cabrera is really going to play 3B and Raburn 2B, who will DH? Is Andy Dirks a leading LF option with Delmon Young DHing?
(hotstatrat from Daydreamland)
They'll fall back on Adam Wilk or Duane Below if Turner isn't ready right off... Dirks should get a lot of time in left field, assuming Leyland doesn't develop an unhealthy Clete Thomas fixation. (Steven Goldman)
