YearComment

2013 After two years of substance abuse, legal and immigration problems, Belisario finally got his life and his paperwork in order, and after serving a 25-game suspension for a violation of the Joint Drug Agreement, joined the Dodgers in early May. With his two-seamer—thrown a remarkable 83 percent of the time—still firing at 95 mph, he quickly pitched his way into high-leverage duty. Working 81 appearances, he reeled off a carbon copy of his breakout 2009 campaign, save for allowing a few more inherited runners to score. He smothered righties, and if he couldn't do the same to lefties, his overall 558 OPS allowed testified to his dominance. If he can keep his nose clean, he'll be part of the Dodgers' late-game plan again in 2013.
2012 A pleasant surprise in 2009 and a bust in 2010 amid personal woes that included a DUI-related charge and a month-long drug rehab, Ronald Belisario spent the entire 2011 season on the restricted list because he was unable to obtain a work visa. His paperwork came through in late December, but he must serve a 25-game drug suspension before he can return to the active roster.
2011 A fantastic free-talent find in 2009, Belisario was a problem child in 2010, serving two stints on the restricted list for troubles of his own making: an arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence in June 2009 delayed his work visa and cost him time in spring training and April, and just after he settled into a groove, he left the team for five weeks to undergo treatment in a substance-abuse program. On the mound, Belisario's strikeout and home-run rates moved substantially in the wrong directions, though he generated a ton of ground balls, shutting down righties (.246/.299/.351) and pitching much better than his results suggested; alas, 12 of the 24 runners he bequeathed went on to score. The Dodgers could use a return to his reliable 2009 form, so they will be rooting for the pitcher to get his life in order.
2010 A tremendous free-talent find, this 25-year-old Venezuelan had never advanced beyond Double-A, putting up an ugly 4.89 ERA in three stints at that level sandwiched around years lost to Tommy John surgery (2005) and a suspension (2006). The Dodgers plucked him off the scrapheap and, thanks to a mid-90s two-seam fastball, he became one of Joe Torre's workhorses, generating ground balls by the bushel. Despite a few high-leverage hiccups and a month lost to elbow woes, he was sheer hell on righties (.157/.234/.252). As with fellow workhorse Ramon Troncoso, his workload bears watching, but he's yet another reminder that good relievers can be found in unlikely places.

DateQuestionAnswer
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think there's a chance Torre uses any other reliever than Broxton or Kuo the rest of the season?
(Dingers Blog from Los Angeles)
Man, watching the Dodger bullpen has become quite an ordeal lately, as Torre has burned through yet another set of high quality arms who were too successful for their own good - Ramon Troncoso, please join Corey Wade in the Scott Proctor Memorial Lounge, and if you see Ronald Belisario, tell him he's needed there too. Oh, and Mr. Kuo, your third Tommy John surgery is scheduled. Same side, correct? (Jay Jaffe)
