BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Joey Bats was slowly digging his way out of a dreadful start to the year when a wrist injury put him on the shelf in mid-July. He returned to the Jays lineup at the end of August but was back on the disabled list, this time for good, after only two games. Even before injuries wiped out nearly all of the second half for Bautista, he was enduring a largely disappointing season. His over-the-fence power was still there, but an absurd number of balls in play were converted to outs—his .215 BABIP was the lowest among players with at least 300 plate appearances. Toronto’s offense fell apart without Bautista, scoring 1.15 fewer runs per game after he went on the disabled list. Wrist injuries have a tendency to sap power, so don’t be surprised if his 6.8 percent home-run rate dips. He’ll almost certainly have better luck on balls in play, however, so he should see a rebound in batting average.
2012 One of the cons pulled by “Fast” Eddie Felson, Paul Newman’s poolshark protagonist of The Hustler, is to sink an impossible rail shot while stumblingly inebriated. When his partner challenges him to repeat the trick, Felson misses badly. To the rest of the pool hall, Fast Eddie looks too hardheaded and hard-drinking to realize when he’s been lucky. But when the bet is laid down for the second time, it’s to the unsuspecting onlooker’s surprise (and significant pecuniary disadvantage) that Fast Eddie straightens up and nails the shot. Joey Bats took what look like the hardest shot on the table—following up a season in which he quadrupled his career high in home runs—straightened his tie, squared his hips, and drilled one in the corner pocket. Never mind the decrease in home runs (he still led the majors), Bautista increased his walk rate and decreased his strikeout rate for an unbelievable fourth season in a row. Part of the increase in walks was due to the league figuring out that, like Fast Eddie, Bautista was no fluke: his 24 intentional walks led the league. But even if you take away the IBBs, Bautista still took more walks this year than last. In other words: pay up, fellas.
2011 The facts in the major-league mystery of one Jose Bautista are as follows: • Bautista’s success in 2010 carried over from a strong September 2009, a month in which he hit .257/.339/.606. • Bautista nearly tripled his career home-run rate in 2010. He also increased his walk rate and decreased his strikeout rate by one-third apiece. • Of his major-league-best 54 home runs, 53 were hit to left or left-center. In fact, the further he hit the ball, the more likely he was to pull it. He’s not a dead-pull hitter; he’s a six-foot-under pull hitter. • Bautista credits at least some of his success to an adjustment he made at the suggestion of first-base coach Dwayne Murphy to begin his swing earlier. The idea was to turn on, and drive, fastballs. It’s extraordinarily rare for a player to go from utility roster-froth to home-run champion, but that’s what Bautista did. He won’t hit 50 again, even if he maintains the improved plate discipline (in fact, 50-plus-homer guys with good plate discipline have historically suffered bigger drop-offs than their less-patient counterparts). He’s become a very good hitter, but if teams are smart, it could be May before he sees an inside fastball.
2010 In addition to giving Barajas and his .258 OBP 110 starts in 2009, the Blue Jays started Jose Bautista at a corner position 89 times. Like Barajas, Bautista has some value as a reserve, but he's woefully overextended as a starter. Bautista has played everywhere but shortstop and catcher, will take his walks, and has 15-homer power, but that’s undermined by his complete inability to hit for average (.238 career), and the fact that he’s not particularly good defensively anywhere, though he has at least made significant strides at third, his “natural” position. With Joe Inglett in Texas and the new Jays administration unwilling to use Bautista to fill one of their corner outfield vacancies, this year Bautista may finally assume the roving utility role for which he’s best suited.
2009 Overextended as the Pirates’ everyday third baseman the last three years, Bautista began to fulfill his utilityman potential after coming to the Jays in a late August swap, getting multiple starts at first, second, and third over the season’s final weeks. Bautista can’t hit for average and strikes out too much, but given his ability to play everywhere but shortstop and catcher, his walks and modest power make him a handy bench player.
2007 If there`s a record for most big league stops in a two-year period without a decent showing in any of them, Bautista must have set it over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. It was a different story when he was called up in May of 2006. Through the end of July, he was golden, hitting .362/.485/.847. One heck of a course correction was coming up: Bautista hit .215/.323/.316 in August and .167/.278/.346 in September. A player with that kind of first-half production who can play all three outfield positions and third base would be a handy fellow to have around, but sadly he`s not going to do that again. A hallmark of bad teams is that they take the players who would be perfect complementary parts on a contender and stretch them into starting roles. Here`s exhibit A.
2005 Bautista will probably have to spend a year in Double-A to regain the development time lost to the screwup of exposing him to the Rule 5 draft, but he should still be able to reclaim a career. In this, he might be like Eddie Williams, who lost part of his career to roster shenanigans, but who finally did OK when he got an opportunity. But that's two years of playing time that he's lost to injury and organizational oversight, and that's a dent in anybody's career.
