2011 Brian Bass got a couple of shots to pitch out of the Pirates' bullpen last season. He landed an invite to spring training with the Phillies, who are apparently looking to leaven their rotation of the best pitchers in baseball with one of the worst.
2010 In something of a throwback to the days when middle relievers carried heavy workloads, Bass was the Orioles' long-relief man. Like his forebears of yore, he was as thoroughly unimpressive as you'd expect from someone who spent the whole year in that role. He does at least throw a decent sinker, racking up the ground balls. He also throws a couple of pretty poor breaking pitches, a slider and curve which have a tendency to get drilled; despite the high ground-ball rate, he still gives up an average-plus number of home runs. With the young pitchers the Orioles have coming, Bass has no chance of getting back to rotation work.
2009 The Orioles were pretty close to recruiting pitchers from their sales department, the security guards, the crowd... some of those peanut vendors have good arms... as the injuries piled up late last season. They found a warm body with a pedigree in getting Bass from the Twins. It was a classic replacement-level acquisition, and that's pretty much what Bass has been throughout his career.
2008 Brian Bass earned his ticket out of the Royals' organization with a poor 2006 season that featured a suspension. He's on the Twins' 40-man, although it's hard to see a role for him in the Land of 10,000 Pitchers.
2004 Every year, the ballpark in Wilmington turns a pitching suspect into a prospect. Brian Bass got the wind beneath his wings last season. There's reason to think he's not just a ballpark illusion, given his youth and history of success even before last year. There are prospects, there are sleepers, and then, like Affeldt two years ago and Bass today, there are the guys so deeply in REM that their dreams would have made Timothy Leary jealous.
