YearComment
2010 Jimmy Barthmaier made his major-league debut with the Pirates in 2008 but blew out his elbow after two starts with Indianapolis last season, underwent Tommy John surgery, and was released.
2009 Claimed off the waiver wire from the Astros, Barthmaier had a solid season in the Pirates' system last year, struggling only in his first taste of the major leagues (in part because of a bad case of nerves). A big guy who throws fairly hard, his out pitch is actually an outstanding curve that he tightened up last season. Adding a serviceable changeup is the only thing keeping Barthmaier from being a serviceable big-league starter.
2008 A highly-regarded prospect a year ago, Jimmy Barthmaier crashed and burned at Double-A last year as he continued to struggle to find a secondary pitch to go with his low-90s fastball. The Pirates have picked him up off waivers.
2007 An Astros executive says that Barthmaier`s best skill is `missing bats.` He also has some ground ball tendencies, a trait that helped him limit batters to just six home runs last year. Barthmaier doesn`t have a third pitch beyond his low-90s heat and plus curveball, so he`s likely bullpen material. Regardless, the Astros got great value for their thirteenth-round pick in 2003, having convinced Barthmaier that baseball was a better path than football.
2006 Barthmaier throws hard, reaching 94-95 flat out, and supplements the gas with a nasty curveball. The problem: he can`t throw the hook for strikes. A high school draftee, he is extremely athletic, but has a lot to learn. Two years from now, he could be anywhere from a washout, a stud prospect, a longshot with a puncher`s chance, or a converted outfielder.
