2010 After a season ruined by a dead arm and a losing bout with a door, John Bale's 2009 got off to an even worse start when he lost 25 pounds from a hyperactive thyroid; he was waived in December.
2009 Bale won the fourth rotation spot in spring training, but came down with a dead arm after just three starts. Frustrated by the slow pace of his lifeless appendage's resuscitation, he decided to finish the job, breaking his pitching hand by punching a hotel door in early May. Shoulder trouble popped up again midsummer, but Bale managed to make it back to the Royals in September. He's a useful lefty piece to have as a swingman, so after non-tendering him the Royals re-signed him to a lesser deal.
2008 After being signed out of Japan to a two-year deal, Bale had a shoulder strain that necessitated three separate rehab assignments before he finally debuted in mid-July. From that point on, he was a key member of the bullpen as a rare left-handed long reliever, the large platoon split that characterized his pre-Japan career having disappeared. By year's end, the Royals were contemplating moving Bale to the rotation for 2008. Given his strong peripherals, it's not as crazy as it sounds.
2007 Prior to the 2002 season, Allard Baird traveled to Japan and signed left-hander Darrell May, who gave the Royals one good year sandwiched between two bad ones. This winter, Dayton Moore very quietly signed his own gaijin southpaw, John Bale, while the winter meetings were still abuzz over the Gil Meche deal. What the signing lacks in ambition, it makes up for in its risk aversion. It`s hard to pan a two-year, $4-million contract for any free agent, and Bale`s translated performance from Japan suggests a pitcher who can give the Royals an ERA around 4.00 with peripherals to match. While we don`t have splits from Japan, Bale pitched 79 innings in the majors from 1999 to 2003 and completely neutralized left-handed hitters--their career line against him was .147/.253/.235. Dollar for dollar, he might wind up being one of the best signings of the winter.
