BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 The good news is that Baker, who missed much of the previous two seasons with elbow issues that required Tommy John surgery in September 2010, stayed healthy all year. The bad news is that whatever offensive game he once possessed went MIA. His OPS over the last three years is 582, and he hasn't homered in a big-league game since September 4, 2009. Baker's defense behind the plate wasn't much better. That leaves "ChiPs" jokes and . . . well, just "ChiPs" jokes.
2012 John Baker began 2010 as the Marlins’ starting catcher, but elbow soreness landed him on the disabled list in early May. After rehabilitation failed to ease the discomfort, he underwent offseason Tommy John surgery and spent the majority of 2011 on the 60-day DL. With John Buck signed through 2013, the Marlins shipped Baker to San Diego in exchange for left-handed starter Wade LeBlanc.
2011 John Baker lost most of the season to a sore forearm that finally resolved into a need for Tommy John surgery, which should keep him shelved for most of 2011.
2010 The average major league catcher hit .254/.321/.396 last year. The Marlins got .276/.350/.419 out of the Baker/Ron Paulino platoon, so they were very quietly ahead of the game. Baker’s batting slid from 2008, with a drop in his line-drive rate leading to a drop in batting average on balls in play like night follows day or the placement of a quality science-fiction TV show on Friday night leads to cancellation. Baker would be an acceptable placeholder for a more offense-oriented catcher if not for his defensive weaknesses—his throwing isn’t quite Jason Varitek-level bad, but his 20 percent caught-stealing rate was nonetheless in the lower echelon of starting catchers.
2009 You may remember him from Moneyball. Baker has seen his raw minor league numbers improve across three straight seasons, encouraging the Marlins to give him a chance when Matt Treanor went down. Baker's career had in part stalled thanks to his poor skills behind the plate, but he worked hard to improve during the season, even receiving assistance from the man he was replacing. Expecting Baker to continue to hit as well as he did for the Fish would be a bit much, but he's patient and his left-handedness gives him an advantage on most potential rivals. The Fish will give him a shot at the starting job in 2009, though they have also shopped around for another backstop.
2005 Oakland has a good group of catchers in the organization, but it remains to be seen if any of them have much star power. Baker and Brown are already in the upper levels, they had two interesting guys at full-season A-ball in John Suomi and David Castillo, and they picked two more in '04, Kurt Suzuki and Landon Powell. All of them could turn into serviceable backups, but it's most likely the last pair who might be something more.

Meanwhile, Baker and Brown have a Kendall-sized problem in front of them. Baker helped himself last year when, in having to rehab his shoulder after '03, he started taking his overall conditioning more seriously. He gets good marks within the organization for his catching skills, and backup backstops who can hit and hit lefty tend to be in demand.
