BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 After two and a half seasons of roughly identical production, Asche is approaching predictability. Bumped off third base by the defensively superior and still-improving Maikel Franco, the Phillies tried Asche in left field in order to keep his bat in the lineup. That bat followed suit from 2014 and the abbreviated debut in 2013: a sub-.700 OPS, somewhere in the vicinity of a .250 TAv and a smattering of extra-base hits to complement unremarkable defense. In an organization that has other, younger corner players either graduating or rapidly accelerating toward The Show, Asche's future in Philadelphia is becoming tenuous and murky, no matter how predictable his production may be.
2015 Well, Asche won't ever be able to say he didn't get a chance. With a one-year head start on Maikel Franco, he had the third base job to himself, and with a better showing would have pushed the Phillies to consider other plans for Franco. Instead, he mustered only an average offensive line, paired it with sloppy defense, and most likely doomed himself to a career as a traveling depthman. In fairness, his major-league numbers are essentially in line with what his minor-league track record suggested, so asking for more was asking too much. His best bet at locking in playing time is reestablishing the dominance over righties that he showed in the minors, but there isn't a first-division player lurking beneath the surface here.
2014 With fellow third base prospect Maikel Franco grabbing all of the Phillies-related scouthound headlines, Cody Asche flew under the radar. But the former fourth-round pick led his Triple-A team in slugging and, with a head start on Franco, gets first crack at the position in the majors. Asche's defense has progressed slowly over his minor-league career, but he looked comfortable in Philadelphia. He is still a below-average defender but is a hard worker who has overcome weaknesses before. He's the favorite to win the starting job, though he'll surely be keeping an eye on those Franco headlines.
2013 Asche enjoyed a breakout season by responding well to an aggressive assignment to High-A. He also acquitted himself well in Double-A before heading west for a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, which he led in doubles. At 23, the college product should earn a Triple-A assignment to start the season and could reasonably wind up in Philly at some point during the season, though it should be noted that defense is easily the biggest hole in his game, and the Phillies will want him to work on that.

2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Ben! I need to cut three of the following from my 16 team 5x5 dynasty team; Cody Asche, John Jaso, Ike Davis, Dayan Viciedo, Will Venable, Gerardo Parra. Who gets the axe if it you made the call? Keep in mind Asche is my only insurance for Wright at 3B and Jaso is Wilson Ramos’ backup. many thanks!
(Gravybill from Paradise)
Viciedo, Venable, Asche. If you're super worried about Wright, cut Parra instead. (Ben Carsley)
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you see M. Franco turning out?
(maxpowers from chicago)
Low-obp but above average power for third base to go with below average defense. Valuable player and better than Cody Asche, but not a star. Will lose a ton of value when he has to move to first in his late 20's. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think Cody Asche does this season?
(Master P from Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica)
I'm not a big Asche fan for this year. The Phillies are talking about moving Maikel Franco to 1B but it wouldn't surprise me to see Asche lose the job by August. If Asche does stick, you're probably looking at 12-14 HR with a .240 or .250 batting average. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a vacuum whom do you prefer, Henry Urrutia or Cody Asche?
(MRubio52 from The eye of Snowpocalypse)
Give me Asche. I am intrigued by Urrutia but he'll be 27 this year and I'm not sure how much power there is. He's useful, but I'll take the third baseman. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Which rookies do you see making the biggest impact in 2014?
(floydwicker from NorCal)
Hi FloydWicker.

From a fantasy perspective, Billy Hamilton is probably #1 with a bullet. He's going to steal a lot of bases, and even if he only keeps his OBP around .300 he will still get on base enough to be a category monster. Xander Bogaerts is the other guy I really like in 2014. He should leave camp with the job and should be even better than he was last year. I expect more power from him. If you're looking for someone a little less obvious, I like Maikel Franco a lot. Cody Asche is likely a placeholder, and I could see Franco up with the big club in June. He isn't a fantasy beast, but could be a decent contributor at 3B for both the Phillies and his fantasy squads. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on Cody Asche...is he the Phillies' regular third baseman in 2014?
(oldjim4920 from Los Angeles)
Hi oldjim.

There's a good chance that Asche is the Phillies starting 3B in 2014. The free agent crop at the position is weak, and while I suppose the Phillies could try make a move for someone like Chase Headley, given their already high payroll and the fact that their new TV deal doesn't kick in until 2015, the team is probably not going overpay a Michael Young again. From what I've seen, I like the bat so far. I think that the batting average might not be there, but a 15-20 HR season wouldn't surprise me. If Asche can hit .260, that's worth it for a standard mixed 3B; otherwise, he might be more of an injury replacement. In deeper leagues, he's definitely a worthy play at corner. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)2014 Phillies. Who gets the most-to-least big league plate appearances? Cody Asche, Maikel Franco, Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez, Delmon Young, Michael Martinez?
(Broken Arrow from Far From Philly)
Cody Asche, just a hunch no real thing to back that up. (Zach Mortimer)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should Phillies fans be more thankful for Darin Ruf or Cody Asche? And will we ever get to be thankful for Tyson Gillies?
(Governator from Philly)
Ruf over Asche, but don't get too excited about either player. Gillies can really run and play some defense, but he's a fifth outfielder due to lack of plate discipline and power. (Jason A. Churchill)
