2003 With the much-anticipated departure of Arrojo, the last reminder of the disastrous 2000 stretch-drive trades will be gone. Between Sprague, Brogna, Bichette, Lansing, and Arrojo the Red Sox wasted nearly $20 million on below-replacement-level production. In recent years, Arrojo has been injured as often as he has been productive. He’s been signed by the Pirates, probably to shore up the rotation, but don’t count on him for anything.
2002 Written off in mid-May as an expensive bust—the Sox took on Mike Lansing’s contract as part of the deal to get Arrojo in July 2000—Arrojo jumped into Pedro Martinez’s spot in the rotation and was the team’s second-best starter for his nine outings, with six quality starts and a superb 1.5 SNWAR. Unfortunately, he went down with a sore shoulder in August and wasn’t the same when he returned. There's some upside here.
2001 The one Red Sox trade that really worked out last year brought the team its first decent non-Pedro Martinez starter in Arrojo, who posted five quality starts (plus two good not-quite-six-inning outings) in his two months with Boston. Arrojo’s age and the soundness of his arm are in question, but if he can last the 2001 season, as seems likely, he and Martinez will be a potent one-two punch.
2000 If human ages could be determined like trees’ ages are, he would be undergoing microsurgery to reattach a limb. There's no way he is only 31 years old. Arrojo's desire to pitch was questioned when he went on the disabled list at the end of May with shoulder inflammation and a 7.31 ERA. He was vindicated upon returning, posting a 4.08 ERA the remainder of the season. The increases in his walk and home-run rates, even after his return, and his continuing problems (969 OPS) with left-handed batters make me think he still isn't completely healthy. Arrojo was traded to Colorado in the Vinny Castilla deal; he puts the ball in play, which doesn’t bode well for his chances on Planet Coors.
1999 Deserved to be Rookie of the Year. His secret is his arsenal; none of the weapons are overpowering alone, but the variety is overwhelming. Five pitches - a two-seam fastball that goes to the right, a four-seamer that goes left, a slider, sinker, and curve are only the start of the problem. You also have to contend with a delivery that goes anywhere between full overhand to submarine. The sidearm and underhand stuff was especially deadly on right-handed hitters, who managed just a .190 EqA off him (lefties hit .280). You would think that a pitcher like this would be more vulnerable the second time a team sees him, but you’d be wrong: he allowed more runs, more hits, and more walks per nine innings the first time he faced a team than the second.
1998 The highly touted signee out of Cuba, Arrojo is almost certain to be in the Rays’ rotation on Opening Day. His big pitch is the splitter, although he works in a slider and fastball. He’s listed as being a year older than fellow Cubano Ariel Prieto which, if true, makes him awfully old, because Prieto is definitely older than the 28 years he claims. At this point, “Cuban pitcher” may wind up being one of those timeless derogatory terms, like “Dutch courage,” only less fun.
