YearComment
2005 Occupied a role that more teams should utilize, the hybrid starter/reliever, making 15 starts and 25 relief appearances. Alvarez pitched OK, showing very good control throughout the year, and doing what he was asked for the team. This role may be perfect for him, as he tired as a pure starter. He's still got very good stuff from time to time, and if he's in the right environment, he could be effective for a few more years. The Dodgers wisely brought him back, and he'll see his share of starts with Edwin Jackson and Kaz Ishii both question marks at the back of the rotation.
2003 Alvarez will be looking for a team to take a flyer on him, and he’s not a bad risk if he comes cheap, which he surely will after his performance in this millennium. The critical object lesson for the Rays appears to have been learned: guys built like Sid Fernandez and Chris Bosio generally age about as well as Bosio and Fernandez did. Signed by the Dodgers, arguably out of nostalgia by ex-White Sox executive Dan Evans.
2002 The Devil Rays must decide if it's better to pay Wilson Alvarez $7 million and have him pitch for you, or if it’s better to pay him $7 million and send him home. Of course, there’s no guarantee that they’ll get to make that choice. Even after recovering from shoulder surgery last year, Alvarez—who was never a paragon of physical fitness—encountered numerous setbacks and shut it down for good in August.
2001 Note the lack of a 2000 line. Wilson Alvarez missed the season, at a cost of about $8 million, with a torn rotator cuff. When healthy, he's an effective above-average pitcher; he's just not healthy much anymore. The Devil Rays are counting on a return, but rotator-cuff injuries are about the worst thing that can happen to a pitcher.
2000 He pitched in pain most of the season, twice landing on the disabled list with arm problems. In contrast to 1998, Rothschild didn't baby Alvarez in the least, letting him run up high pitch counts within a week after returning from the DL each time. The portly left-hander will never meet the expectations that came with his immense contract, but he will toss 180 very good innings if handled with care. Rothschild seems to want him to do more than that, which makes Alvarez a very high risk.
1999 With a $35M contract, he was supposed to be the ace of the staff. He started out well enough, but started getting hit hard in May; he eventually admitted he'd been pitching in pain. He missed six weeks with what was called either shoulder tendinitis or an inflamed rotator cuff, depending on who you listen to. He probably should have stayed out longer, as it took another two months after he returned before he began to pitch well again. Alvarez was awfully hardheaded about it; he never wanted to go on the DL at all, and was indignant that he was on a pitch count when he returned. Rothschild saved him from himself.
1998 He disappointed many Giants fans, but he didn’t pitch that poorly for them. His season with the Chisox was fine, he’s entering what looks to be the prime of his career and he didn’t pitch enough innings in the National League to judge his performance. None of which means I think the team should throw wads of money at him. Alvarez looks to be a fine pitcher for many years to come, the next five of which are now scheduled to be in Tampa Bay.
1997 One of baseball’s great pitchers, Alvarez continued his wacky ways, this time having a great first half followed by a mediocre second half. He led AL left-handers in quality starts and quality starts as a percentage of starts (20/35). His curve can be devastating, and he’s always entertaining to watch.
1996  Alvarez had an awful first half, going 2-5 with a 5.45 ERA, and admitted that he was out of shape after the long layoff of the strike. He's worked hard on his move to first, and become very good an stopping the running game. His curve, always his most unreliable pitch, doesn't work well against lefties, so he's that rare lefthanded pitcher who isn't a screwballer who has some trouble with lefties.

2012-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dan, with great respect, I confess that I though ill of the White Sox in 1997. They had spent a fortune on bringing Albert Belle to the team - a guy who's behaviour made him hard to cheer for no matter how well he hit, then traded two of their star pitchers at the trading deadline (Wilson Alvarez and Roberto Hernandez) when they seemingly still had a chance at the division. Can you give us some explanatory background to these doings?
(hotstatrat from Canada)
That was an organizational decision, and it paid dividends in 2000 when the team, bolstered by the trade you mentioned (six or seven players in return from the Giants), won the Central Division title, as Foulke and Howry got a lot of our key outs in the final stages of games. (Dan Evans)
2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, who are the pitchers coming onto the ballot next year? I've heard that there's going to be a wave which will cut into Blyleven's vote count. Is that true? Also, do you see the Vets Committee enshrining Lou and Tram after Tram drops off the ballot (this seems, rather unfortunately, inevitible).
(David from Huntersville NC)
Pitchers eligible for next year's ballot include Kevin Brown, John Franco, Al Leiter, Wilson Alvarez, Ugueth Urbina, Ismael Valdez, Paul Quantrill, Cal Eldred, Kirk Rueter and Steve Reed. I don't see any of them cutting into anybody's support, and other than the first three, I don't see any of them even getting through the nomination stage. Though if Mike Jackson can... (Jay Jaffe)
