2013 Alburquerque’s slider has officially been labeled NSFW by the government. Three Downriver fans were fired for watching GIFs of it on their lunch break. The 86-88 mph breaker is easily one of the best in baseball. Of Alburquerque’s 85 strikeouts as a major leaguer, 74 of them have ended on a slider, even though the hitters have known it was coming. He throws the pitch nearly 60 percent of the time, the third-highest rate in baseball over the last two years (among relievers with 50 or more innings). Alburquerque is one of several closer candidates in the Detroit bullpen, though his candidacy is more of the dark-horse variety since he needs to clear the health hurdle first. He missed most of 2012 after elbow surgery.
2012 The Tigers took a flyer on Alburquerque as a minor league free agent and were rewarded with one of the most surprisingly impressive relief performances of the year. Alburquerque has always been short on control but look at that strikeout rate! The slight Dominican can dial his heater up to the high-90s and his slider was virtually unhittable. No, really: he allowed only a single extra-base hit all year and his .149 opponent’s slugging percentage was the lowest of the post-war era. The only player able to hit him was Robert Andino, whose batting practice liner accidentally drilled Alburquerque in the head and put him on the shelf for most of August. When he returned he was still effective but his velocity was down, an issue possibly related to the arm problems that surfaced during winter ball, culminating in offseason surgery to insert a screw in his elbow. He is scheduled to return by midseason, and with Benoit, Valverde, and Dotel on hand to work high-leverage situations, the Tigers can ease Alburquerque into the middle innings and see if he can recapture the magic.
2010 Slight Dominican Al Alburquerque infuriates batters and copyeditors alike; he was added to the organization from the Cubs in the Jeff Baker trade, and boasts a nice sinker/slider mix.

BP Chats

2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Love these chats. Al Alburquerque -- Is he as good as he seems? Do you see him closing someday -- perhaps next year if Tigers do not pick up the 9 million dollar option on Velarde?
(thresh50 from boston)
A lot of scouts think he's pitching over his head but I've seen him three times this season and he's just blown people away. I'd be tempted to make him my closer next year if I'm the Tigers. (John Perrotto)
