2013 A former Rule 5 pick from the Pittsburgh organization, Adcock is your prototypical pitch-to-contact arm who relies on keeping the ball down in the zone to find success. He doesnít have enough separation in the velocity between his fastball and off-speed pitches to sneak a pitch by a hungry hitter, so he has to rely on location to be effective. Part of the I-29 brigade that blazed a trail between Kansas City and Omaha in 2012, his value lies in his versatility. He can start or come out of the bullpen. Besides, as the Royals can attest, itís always useful to keep an emergency starter around.
2012 Adcock is a Rule 5 pick from the Pirates organization and the Royals liked him enough to keep him on the major league roster for the entire year. Liking him, though, is different than trusting him. He made only three appearances the entire month of June, and at one point in July went 20 days between trips to the mound. He never pitched above High-A prior to last season. If heís to find success at the major league level, heíll need to throw a higher rate of first strikes (league average of 59 percent, Adcock 55 percent) and figure out how to miss more bats. His repertoire includes a modest fastball that can reach the low 90s with little movement, and a work-in-progress curve with a sharp, downward break. Used in a mop-up role with sparse spot starts last year, he will likely return to the minors to open the season.
2011 The Royals selected righty Nate Adcock in the rule five draft based on his control of three average pitches, but that's probably not enough to stick, even in Kansas City.
