2011-04-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)How often do you confuse Felipe Lopez and Jose Lopez? IT HAPPENS TO ME ALL THE TIME.
(Suttree from DraysBay)
There hasn't been much of a difference between the two since last year, has there? Which of the two has more job security right now? (Marc Normandin)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Got a snap post-mortem on what went so wrong with St. Louis in the last month? I understand small sample size regression to the mean, but why so many regressions all at once, and why were none of them for the better?
(Bill from New Mexico)
They are a stars and scrubs roster, and when the stars struggle even a little bit, it is very tough to compete. Pitching Jeff Suppan more than zero times hurt, and not playing Rasmus everyday made little sense. I can't get on La Russa for all of this either, as his roster is complete with players like Brendan Ryan, Skip Schumaker, Jon Jay, Felipe Lopez, etc. The Cardinals, like the Mariners this year, needed to have a lot go right for them to have a great season; while everything went wrong with the Mariners, the Cards had some go right, enough to keep them in contention, but not enough to push them into the playoffs. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-17 14:45:00 (link to chat)Would Brandon Inge make the Cardinals better? Would Felipe Lopez move to 2B and eliminate Skip?
(drive2fast19 from Detroit)
I would rather have Lopez at 2B and Inge at 3B than Lopez at 3B and Skip at 2B. We're not talking about a massive improvement here, but the Reds and Cards will be jockeying for the division the rest of the way and anything that constitutes an improvement that won't drastically hurt the payroll is worth pursuing. (Eric Seidman)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where do you think Felipe Lopez will hit in the Cards lineup? Thoughts on what kind of numbers he'll post?
(Victor from San Diego)
I try not to guess where TLR is going to put people in his lineup. .280/.350/.410, lots o'runs. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-17 16:00:00 (link to chat)If the Tigers secure Johnny Damon, and perhaps even Felipe Lopez on the cheap, would your opinion on them contending in the AL Central improve "considerably" or just "incrementally"?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
It seems like Scott Sizemore is going to be ready sooner rather than later, so I'm not sure Lopez would help. I think adding Damon might help a little, but Ryan Raburn is a pretty good player in his own right. I'm just not sure where Damon would be that big of an upgrade. I think the Tigers have a pretty good shot already, however. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-02-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)A lot of rumors that Felipe Lopez is heading to the Cards, what are you hearing? Is he a guy you'd target as number 1 or two hole guy to hit ahead of Albert and Matt? thanks.
(Greg27 from St. Louis)
Haven't been following that one, but makes some sense. I shouldn't start a chat with something that BP can't do, but one of those (few) things is understand the dynamics of a clubhouse. I've had several people in baseball go out of their way to say bad things about Lopez, so no matter what he can do on the field, he's seen as a negative by many. Is Tony La Russa the guy to change that or at least manage it? I don't know, seems like he has enough distractions already, but the relationship of manager to players is fascinating and one of the things I love seeing yet don't see enough from with my beat writer friends. (Will Carroll)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any chance the Twins don't go into the season depending on a combination of Punto, Tolbert, Casilla and Harris at 3B/2B?
(Brock Dahlke from Shakopee, MN)
Every day that goes by makes the chance smaller and smaller. Felipe Lopez is still out there, and if I were the Twins, I'd be talking to him. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)CK, I've heard nothing about Felipe Lopez this off-season, any rumors that were floating around the meetings or ideas where he might end up? Thanks!
(Kdub83 from Milwaukee)
None that I heard, but here I think F-Lop has long since earned a reputation for unreliable performance. If you're in the market for second basemen, there are better options. He'll wind up somewhere, but it's sort of like winding up with the fifth choice on your dance card because you don't want to be a wallflower. He's just not all that, one full productive season in the books or no. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bill Smith says he expects that Ron Gardenhire will keep Nick Punto in the lineup somewhere. This guy is supposed to be Gardenhire's boss. Can't he make him see sense? I'm tired of this cycle where Punto is handed an opening day job, fails miserably, gets replaced by even worse players, gets the job back for the last month, hits decently, and gets a job again the next year. And since it also seems that the Twins are considering bringing back Joe Crede at third or Orlando Cabrera at second (in order to keep Punto somewhere), which is the better alternative? Finally, wouldn't someone like Felipe Lopez be great for the Twins?
(russadams from Target Center)
I'm not sure Nick Punto is so much the problem as an inability to put real players at third base and left field is the problem. If Punto can bat ninth, hit what he hits and play plus defense, he's an acceptable solution on a team with seven or eight actual hitters. Punto is better, relative to his position, than Delmon Young or the collective nightmare at third base or what Alexi Casilla (who I like) did this year. Focusing on him and not those problems is a mistake.

Lopez is a good player who brings more offense than defense, and that's always been a good path to the bench in Minnesota. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-23 16:00:00 (link to chat)Which of the following FA 2ndbasemen best fits the Cubs' offensive needs(Lopez,Polanco, Hudson, Iwamura)?
(Matt from Chicago)
The Cubs got an aggregate .247/.302/.353 line from their second baseman this year, none of whom played more than 70 games at the position. Felipe Lopez is interesting, as he went from .308/.356 in 2007 to .343/.387 in 2008 and .383/.427 this season, but assuming a slight decline in this year's numbers, do you really want to pay a relatively hefty salary to a guy in the .345/.400 range? Hudson would be a solid investment but his injury situation fogs the issue. If he's healthy he would be the way to go, but I would put money on them signing Lopez and hoping the .383/.427 is a sign of things to come. (Eric Seidman)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)HI John. That's for doing this chat! It's frustrating as a Twins fan that the team never makes a move to get better. All we ever hear from the front office is that "they're trying hard, but other teams ask for too much in return". Yet, guys we could use, like Rafael Betancourt, Felipe Lopez, and Cla Meredith get dealt for almost nothing. Are the fans being lied to? Why are the Twins never able to get in on deals like those?
(Kirby from Minnesota)
The Twins strongly believe in their player development system and prefer a homegrown team. It's worked for them in the fact they've been highly competitive throughout the decade. However, I think they've cost themselves a shot at making at least World Series appearance by not making a big in-season move. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)How can Felipe Lopez get traded for almost nothing, while Freddy Sanchez fetches a top prospect? Do teams differ that much in their player evaluations?
(tcunning from MN)
You hit right on the head. Every team evaluates players differently and that was the reason in the disparity of talent moving in the two trades. (John Perrotto)
2009-04-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a bubble would Juan Pierre have any value at 2B? It seems like hes not far off from Felipe Lopez.
(modofacid from Philly)
This bubble would have to be one where baseball was played counterclockwise, as Pierre throws left-handed. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, am I crazy to think that Felipe Lopez can consolidate his Cardinals' gains plus the fact that he only got a 1-year deal and put together a big season? I'm seeing an Alex Mogilny-esque salary drive here! Thanks as always!!
(Dave W from Atlanta, GA)
I think we're definitely in Patsy Cline territory in getting too worked up over F-Lop, but that's me. Even though I think I touched on how I think he's got a reasonable shot at exploiting a move to the Banky Bank Bandbox in Phoenix because he was able to enjoy outsized benefits bopping in the Great American (Batting Practice) Ballpark, I think we need to keep from getting irrationally exuberant on the subject. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-04 13:30:00 (link to chat)How does the K. Greene signing improve the Cardinals? Is he a better option than Felipe Lopez? Enjoy your calls into Bernie Miklasz's radio show every Tuesday.
(Nate from St. Louis)
Oh, sure. Even if Greene isn't quite at his peak, there's a 30-, 35-run defense between the two players' gloves. Felipe Lopez is a utility player, not a middle infielder. He cannot be allowed to start much up the middle. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Khaliel Greene? Stop or go? Felipe Lopez is my other option at shortstop.
(goraffe from NYC)
I'd bench him for now. He's a mess, as is most of the rest of that lineup. (Marc Normandin)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Love your work on TA and the chats. My Nats question for this year: whither Felipe Lopez?
(Rinalro from DC)
Starting shortstop. I really don't think Cristian Guzman's back, or that he'll stay healthy. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is Felipe Lopez's actual talent level? Is he the guy who hits 20+ home runs and steals a decent number of bases, or the moping failure of last year? The Nats need him to be the former.
(Kevin from Fairfax VA)
Reports are that Lopez says he has changed his attitude but we'll see. He certainly has the talent to be a 20/20 guy but he's going to have to prove in spring trianing that he deserve a spot in the lineup over Guzman and/or Belliard. (John Perrotto)
