BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 After five straight seasons with a 60-day DL stint, Chavez avoided the disabled list completely in 2012, and with his back feeling better than it had in years, he was able to generate enough torque to drive the ball, posting his best TAv since 2004. It didnít hurt that Yankees manager Joe Girardi hid him from lefties, sending him to the plate with the platoon advantage in nearly 90 percent of his PA, but Chavezís unlikely renaissance probably owed more to the teamís doctors and trainers than it did to any managerial moves. After contemplating retirement during each of the last two winters, Chavez warmed up this time around with a one-year, $3 million deal with the Diamondbacks.
2012 Eric Chavez left stardom behind many injuries ago; the question now is if he can even be a role player. Pop-free hitting and a 71-game DL stay suggest the answer is "no."
2011 Eric Chavez somehow stayed healthy for two months, but didn't hit much. In late May, he was placed on the disabled list with neck spasms, and they must have been the most spasmodic spasms in the history of man, as he never returned to the lineup. The A's made the no-brainer decision to decline his $12.5 million option for 2011.
2010 Chavez surprised many observers in 2009 with a good showing in spring trainingógiven how many injuries he's had, the mental picture of Chavez resembles less an athlete than Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monsteróbut then neck and shoulder issues hit after Opening Day, followed by the discovery of a herniated disk (not Chavez's first), which necessitated another back surgery.†He's reportedly on track to be 100 percent this spring, but at this point nobody is quite sure what 100 percent of Eric Chavez even is anymore, as he's played just 31 games over the past two years and hasn't been at his best since 2004.†The only thing Oakland should look forward to from him at this point is his eight-figure salary coming off the books after the season.
2009 Chavez didn't makes his 2009 debut until the end of May while he recovered from a back surgery, and he lasted a total of 23 games before his shredded shoulder went under the knife for major repairóthe surgery was actually a "three-in-one" that attempted to fix a number of issues in the joint. He's expected to be done rehabbing by the time spring rolls around, and he's penciled in as the starting third baseman. The A's don't have many other worthwhile options, but Chavez is now five years removed from his classic years, and the chips are stacked against him.
2008 After playing hurt all year, Chavez saw his 2007 season come to a merciful conclusion at the end of July. Since then, he's been living an episode of House, undergoing three separate surgical procedures: first, right shoulder surgery to repair a damaged tendon and some labrum problems; second, the big one, a procedure to repair a bulging disk in his back; finally, in the interest of symmetry, doctors cut open his other shoulder to clean up some frayed tissue. The only thing certain about Chavez's future now is that the A's will be giving him $34 million dollars over the next three years.
2007 It`s easy to look at Eric Chavez`s 2006 and wonder what was wrong with him. There`s certainly been no secret about his forearm injury. Really, though, the only significant difference between 2006 and 2005 was a few games and a relatively insignificant drop in batting average. He nailed his career OBP, and given another hundred at-bats he`d have approximated 2005`s doubles and homers. Which isn`t to say Chavez is just a bit of luck from being `himself` again, because maybe this current version is `himself.` From 2001 through 2003, Chavez probably was one of the five best players in the American League, and, considering that he was only 25 in 2003, it really didn`t seem all that crazy when Billy Beane compared him to Barry Bonds, and didn`t seem all that crazy to think Chavez would become a perennial MVP candidate. Now it seems crazy. Whether it`s the injuries or something else, the further we get from 2003, the less we should expect great things. He`s still a good player, of course (especially if he continues to earn the Gold Gloves he`s apparently going to win every season), which is a good thing, as the A`s still owe him nearly $50 million.
2005 If not for the injury, A's fans might have been able to remember 2004 as the year when Chavez put everything together. He's finally started hitting lefties, and his walk rate finally reached the clip Billy Beane's been predicting would eventually come. The defense remains top shelf. Chavez is on the short list of people likely to contend for the AL MVP this year.
2003 A better player than people think, because the Grey Wall of Despair keeps his stats from being overly gaudy. Thereís nothing Chavez canít do on the diamond. Defensively, heís improved dramatically over the past couple of years, and his approach at the plate has become more consistent. He was able to retain the increase in his walk rate, but 13 of those walks were intentional. Still very vulnerable to left-handed pitching; Chavez posted only a .623 OPS against lefties for the year. From a distance, his career path looks similar to Chipper Jonesí, but with less drama and better defense.
2002 Probably the most improved defensive player in baseball, Chavez had a reasonable consolidation yearóall in the second half. Despite appearing overmatched and impatient in the postseason, Chavez had a great second half, hitting .340/.382/.664 after the All-Star break. What is worrisome is the lack of progress Chavez made in terms of selectivity. He drew just 32 unintentional walks and gave away a lot of at-bats. He is self-critical and will work to correct the problem. He's another key to the A's that Beane has locked in through 2004.
2001 Eric Chavez is catching some flak for opening his mouth before the last game against the Yankees, but if Terrence Long makes that catch in the first inning, Chavez has a shot at being baseballís Charles Barkley. Why shouldnít he feel confident? If youíre Eric Chavez, life is sweet. He still isnít hitting left-handers, but losing Olmedo Saenz and John Jaha gave the Aís a chance to see if Chavez can be an everyday player. Itís worth trying when you consider how much progress Jason Giambi has made. Chavez still plays third base a little too upright and flat-footed, but heís got the arm for the position. He has things to work on, but so what? This guy rocks.
2000 Expectations were high, so in some quarters Chavez was perceived as a disappointment. He had to be platooned, and his defense needs work, but the A's believe he's coachable. His hitting got better as the season went on; before a torn plantar fascia sidelined him from mid-August to mid-September, he was on the verge of becoming the big stick in the lineup. Among 1999 AL rookies, Chavez is still the guy who should have the best offensive career.
1998 A great prospect in the perfect organization for him. Chavezí only weakness is strike zone discipline, and if you can learn that anywhere youíll learn it in this system. Powerful stroke, great glove, very quick release throwing to first. The Aís have definitely got him fast-tracked.
