DateQuestionAnswer
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hardest player name for you to spell?
(dianagramr from NYC)
I can spell Doug Mientkiewicz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with the best of them, and I know my Derrek Lee, my Derrick Turnbow and my Derek Jeter, to say nothing of my Jarrod Washburn and my Jered Weaver and my Jaret Wright. I was a spelling bee champ in sixth grade, and also finished second in fourth and third in fifth.

The one that gets me is Mark Teahen. I ALWAYS spell it Teahan, and right now I just had to look again to see that I got it correct. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Isn't the deification of Jack Z amongst the interwebs types getting to be a bit much? He appears to be a very good g.m., but is he really head and shoulders above everyone else, as some seem to be suggesting?
(Wonko The Sane from Earth)
I think we should let them play the games first. How this M's club is going to score runs remains a big mystery, and as for the back of their rotation, well, there's a reason they've been talking to Jarrod Washburn. (Steven Goldman)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any free agents with solid fantasy value out there? Jermaine Dye, Elijah Dukes, Pedro, am I forgetting somebody?
(dangor from New York)
John Smoltz, at least as a reliever, is somebody who can help if he's so inclined, though I guess he's content to go the broadcast route for the moment. A healthy Jarrod Washburn can certainly sponge up a useful number of innings. David Weathers is a handy reliever to have around even at his age. Carlos Delgado might still have something left once he recovers from hip surgery. Gary Sheffield is still a badass who can be a useful bench bat if so inclined, and Joe Crede can pick it at the hot corner if his back is right. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Washburn and the Mets: Is an unreasonable Boras salary demand (is there any other kind?) holding up what seems like a great fit for player and team? Washburn's not great but I find it hard to believe he'll just retire when he can just find a nice big NL ballpark and munch some innings for a nice paycheck.
(Tex Premium Lager from NJ)
Did you ever think you'd seen an offseason where the Mets were so desperate it was constantly, "OMG!!! We might get Bengie Molina!!!" "OMG!!! We got Rod Barajas!!!" Jarrod Washburn is another banana from the same bunch, filler for a team that seems pretty certain to crash on the launchpad. You're right, though, that if there's a place where Washburn best fits it's in a situation like this one. (Steven Goldman)
2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc: Any chance the Royals will sign Washburn? The AL Central is winnable this year and with a rotation lead by Greinke and Meche his addition would certainly make the Royals more competitive.
(keithkowalski from Holts Summit, MO)
I think if you're depending on Jarrod Washburn to put you over the edge then your chances aren't as good as you think. See: Tigers, 2009. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any free agents left unsigned who could be useful to contending teams?
(garethbluejays1 from Newcastle, UK)
I realize it's a well-kept secret that Johnny Damon is still looking for work. Beyond him, Russell Branyan, Rocco Baldelli, Joe Beimel, Carlos Delgado, Jermaine Dye, Pedro Martinez, Chan Ho Park, John Smoltz, Gary Sheffield and Jarrod Washburn all strike me as players who could help somebody win. Not necessarily by getting 500 PA worth of playing time, mind you, and maybe not getting enough playing time to satisfy their own estimations of their talent. Park can pitch out of my bullpen, but if he wants to start, fuggedaboutit. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Indians trying to finish behind the Royals this year? Wouldn't Washburn be a good fit for them assuming they stop acting like Scrooge?
(warclub from Strongsville, OH)
What do you get for fourth place? A life supply of Rice-a-Roni? It's a nice thing to give Jarrod Washburn seven large--if you're Jarrod Washburn. The Indians are behaving much like you might expect a team that knows its 2010 season isn't going to involve contention would, and some would say should. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-07-30 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can the Tigers make a legit move on Josh Willingham and/or Jarrod Washburn? Or will they get what's behind Door #3 and end up w/Cody Ross? Thanks.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
I think it's door No. 3. They don't really have much in the way of prospects that excited other teams. However, I don't think Cody Ross is a bad consolation prize. He's a pretty underrated player in my book. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)I just missed you on the Fan 590, touch on anything important?
(Bill from Toronto)
The "contract year" phenomenon is perception and not reality; context is incredibly important in evaluation player performance and potential. Both of these were spinning off of Jarrod Washburn. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why do you think the Yankees' didn't make a move for Washburn? I'm sure they could've topped the tigers' move without giving up any of the big 4. This is Cashman's worst deadline in a while.
(Eli from Brooklyn)
Jarrod Washburn - Safeco - Mariners' ridiculous outfield defense + Yankee Stadium + Yankees' outfield defense = .7 Alfredo Aceves. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why does it seem like everyone has forgotten that Felix Hernandez exists?
(Joel from GA)
Who?

OK, I'm kidding, of course. It's a fair complaint, but I think much of the problem is the enthusiasm for novelty. In Mariners history, it's novel to see Erik Bedard doing the things that were expected of him, and it's also exciting to see Jarrod Washburn keep on keeping on as far as perpetuating last year's second-half success. And serene above all that is King Felix, ascending as expected--damnably tedious as story lines go. Maybe he needs silly facial hair. Or to hire Turk Wendell to coach him on endearing, contrived nervous tics. Or to be found eating kittens. I don't know, but at this rate, merely growing up to be every bit as excellent as expected is the sort of thing that just isn't seen as "news" in some circles. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for chatting Jay - two part question. 1) Would the following be an equitable trade - Jays send Lyle Overbay and Russ Adams to the Mariners for Jarrod Washburn and some cash? 2) What possible excuse could JP Ricciardi put forth this year for not having Travis Snider in the opening day lineup?
(rawagman from Toronto)
No, it's not enough going to the Mariners, as Adams is without value given his shortcomings on both sides of the ball.

As for Snider, he had a very nice cup of coffee last year and he's not far off, but he's got less than 150 AB above Double-A, and just 500 above A-ball, so I don't think there's harm in some seasoning at Triple-A. But I look forward to an obfuscation from J.P. nonetheless, as those are worth the price of admission. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Would Julio Lugo for Jarrod Washburn straight up be a workable trade?
(Dan from Newton, MA)
No, because Washburn's a league average inning muncher going into the final year of his deal while Lugo's a below average player with two years and perhaps three (if his option vests) on his deal. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm not clear on the trade rules, but remember some trades made in September before. The Mets are so desperate for pitching and with teams out of it, why would they not try to pick up someone like Kenny Rogers or Jarrod Washburn?
(Matt from Queens)
I'm not sure they're not trying. Either acquisition would be ineligible for the postseason, but they could definitely use the help to stave off the Phils... (Derek Jacques)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)If the Mariners wake up, which team is most likely to benefit from the fire sales (outside of the Ms themselves). Thanks!
(Tony from Brooklyn, NY)
Well, there are a lot of contenders who can use a startig pitcher and the Mariners seem willing to move Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn and Miguel Batista. The Cubs really seem to want Bedard, so I'll say they would benefit the most _ if Bedard gets back on track. (John Perrotto)
2008-04-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)other pitchers availible are, Dontrelle Willis,Ted Lilly,Francisco Liriano, Tom Gorzelanny, Ubaldo Jiménez, Jarrod Washburn, Jeff Suppan, Jamie Moyer, Shawn Chacón, Shawn Hill, Kevin Millwood, Andy Sonnanstine, See anything in there you like better the Hughes?
(dogtothedog from Toronto)
Sonnanstine's intriguing. Lilly's using the wrong pitches, from what I can tell. I like Gorzelanny, but I'd like him more if he'd stop hurting my own team's numbers. I'd take Sonnanstine for now, honestly. Phil Hughes is all kinds of messed up at the moment.

Sonnanstine's using a cutter more this year, probably to offset the number of fastballs in the zone hitters knew were coming in '07. It hasn't helped his strikeout rate, but he's lowered the number of base hits he's allowing. That's a tough crowd of FA, I'll give you that... (Marc Normandin)
