2003 Pity Ramirez. Heís a mediocre center fielder with nowhere near the bat to start in the major leagues. He got a quick look in Anaheim, and hit well enough so that heíll get another glance, but heís a long shot to have a career. He needs to improve his offense by about 20% just to hang on in the bigs, and with strikeout-to-walk ratios in the neighborhood of Terry Feltonís ERA, thatís just not that likely to happen.
2002 Kenny Williams made his share of mistakes, but he also made some moves that looked good but didn't work. Trading Jeff Abbott for Julio Ramirez was one of them. Abbott had no spot on a team bulging with right-handed-hitting corner outfielders, and getting a high-upside center fielder seemed like a good idea. Ramirez was brutal in a platoon role, although in fairness he didn't get an extended trial. He'll reemerge as a fourth outfielder; don't expect him to hold a regular job unless he completely overhauls his approach at the plate.
2001 It was an extremely disappointing season for Julio Ramirez, but one the organization should have seen coming like a freight train since the cause has been evident for years: Ramirez has no idea of the strike zone. Batters with both low-walk and high-strikeout totals almost inevitably wash out when they reach the highest levels of the game. Instead of gushing over his speed and how he can beat the snot out of hanging curveballs, the Marlins should have been drilling Ramirez in the skills necessary to be an effective major-league hitter.
2000 Ramirez is a scoutís wet dream, and an illustration of how performance analysis and talent analysis can come together to provide a complete picture of a player. Ramirez is the proverbial five-tool prospect; he looks great in a uniform and impresses talent evaluators with his great speed, strong arm and power. However, because he doesnít control the strike zone, heís not making a significant offensive contribution. Heís not being selective enough, so heís not getting into hittersí counts--which would boost his average and power--or garnering walks, which would help his OBP. Plate discipline can be taught, and itís up to the Marlinsí development staff to both recognize the weakness in Ramirezís game and develop that missing skill. Frankly, itís about the only thing missing: Ramirez is a star in the making.
1999 Finally had an injury-free season in Ď98, and named the fifth-best prospect of the Florida State League. A briliant defensive player, he can casually spear almost any baserunner. Heís extremely fast (71 steals in Ď98), and offensively heís considered to have the highest potential ceiling of any hitter in the organization. Already being compared to Vlad Guerrero, even with the knowledge of what Vlad did this year at the major league level.
