2003 The prototypical one-batter southpaw, Borbon is good at his job, but makes the average right-hander look like Albert Pujols (.308/.404/.561 since 1999). True specialists are unaffordable luxuries in a Jimy Williams bullpen, where all hands are worked to the bone. A free agent, Borbon might have been okay in the American League, but heís made his way back to L.A.
2002 Coming off an ugly 2000 season, Borbon took a unique route in his return to respectability: he slashed his walk rate by more than six per game, the greatest single-year decrease in baseball history. Borbonís wonky elbow is never going to be completely healthy, and itís impossible for him to duplicate last yearís improvement, so this is about as good as it gets.
2001 He looked like the prize in the box of Cracker Jack, the cherry on the sundae, the chad in the ballot box. Pedro Borbon was going to put the Raul Mondesi/Shawn Green trade over the top for the Jays. Then he started pitching. Pedro Borbon got, by unofficial count, seven right-handed batters out all year. The signing of Dan Plesac means Borbon is fighting for a job this spring. He's still capable of helping a good team.
2000 Borbon completed his long and arduous comeback by being a stellar left-handed reliever for about three months. He tired in July, which is understandable: his 39 appearances in the first half matched his total for 1997 and 1998 combined. Another year removed from surgery, heíll be among the better left-handed relievers in baseball. Borbon was dealt to Toronto in the Green trade.
1999 Was just establishing himself as one of the best left-handed relievers in baseball when his shoulder collapsed, and the road back has proven to be longer and more treacherous than anyone expected. Itís hard to predict what heís going to do after rotator cuff surgery; some pitchers show nothing for two or three years and then suddenly regain their stuff. Iíd be surprised if heís one of them.
1997 Bursting with pride after his dad agreed to be a high-profile scab. Lefty spot reliever with a good K rate; heíll be in the majors longer than I was in college.
1996  Borbon was virtually unhittable to start the season, boosting him into the role of top lefty out of the pen. With five dominant starters, Wohlers, and McMichael on the staff, Borbon soon became the *only* lefty needed in the pen, spelling Mike Stanton's demise by mid-season.
