BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 It only seems like Gil has been around since the Eisenhower administration. He’s a pretty good defender who can hit lefties well, and spell either Eckstein or Kennedy in case of nagging injuries. He really shouldn’t be allowed to bat against right-handed pitching; he’s south of a .600 OPS against it. Gil isn’t a horrible guy to have around, but he is a replaceable talent, the type of player teams should be paying around the minimum for. Teams that win championships usually overvalue their roster composition, and having already re-signed him, it looks like the Angels are guilty as charged.
2002 The Pod Person left Gil early: he hit his last home run of the season on July 18. His option was picked up for 2002, but he’s not likely to get this much playing time again. That projection looks pretty optimistic.
2001 Woof woof! What's that, boy? Trouble up the middle? It's sad that Benji Gil has to endure this kind of cheap humor, but did you know his real name is Romar? Beats Benji in my book. Anyway, this is what happens when you break the glass and deploy the emergency middle infielder for the whole season.
1998 Some guys you just want to linger over and wonder what the heck happened. Gil has averaged one strikeout per game in his career; meanwhile, he only draws a walk every 16 at-bats. He’s been caught stealing nine times in 13 career attempts. After the All-Star break last year, he hit .209 with 43 strikeouts and four walks. Traded to the White Sox, where he’s expected to be the starting shortstop in 1998, or until Michael Caruso looks like a better option.
1997 Benji suffered a herniated disk in his back that required surgery this spring, and subsequently lost his job to Kevin Elster. His offense continues to decline as pitchers exploit his willingness to swing at anything. He still rates as an outstanding defender, but his offense is getting too bad to take.
1996  If I were the Rangers, I wouldn't give a hoot in hell if Benji straddled the Mendoza line. His glove is crucial, and here's hoping the team doesn't get frustrated if he starts '96 as cold as he was finishing '95. To put it politely, he probably needs to learn how to bunt.
