YearComment
2010 Onward rolls the replacement-level train, with Erstad as one of the team's biggest offensive offenders. To be fair, Houston shouldn't have expected much else. Erstad's offensive value is entirely wrapped up in his batting average, which bottomed out in 2009. He can still run down flies in the outfield, and plays a decent enough first base, but he's now ten years past his peak, and the arrow is not only pointing down, it's flaccid. Expect a modest dead-cat bounce in 2010, but anyone who offers Erstad more than the minimum and an NRI has made a sucker's bet.
2009 Healthy for the first time in three years, Erstad earned his way into playing time by virtue of defense, batting average, and a very weak starter ahead of him in Michael Bourne. His BABIP was the second-highest of his career—that will come down—and his batting average is as empty as they come. Signed to an extension for 2009, our comments are 1) he comes cheap, 2) you get what you pay for.
2008 The White Sox signing Erstad was a decisively bad idea and a solid sabermetric parlor trick for anyone who wants to argue that chemistry doesn't matter. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but the problem with Erstad isn't whether or not he adds something to a team, it's that whatever it is he does add isn't something you can measure, and it's really doubtful that it overcomes the obvious, measurable handicap that playing him places on a lineup. His charm is such that he'll still be on somebody's bench in 2008, but lord have mercy on that team if he gets another 300 plate appearances or costs much.
2007 Erstad`s the boyfriend you really shouldn`t keep: he might be popular and talented, but he`s bad news. He spends all your money and never really quite delivers on any of his promises. If you only think of him in terms of how good you feel around him, you miss out on the more basic things. You know, like runs. To his credit, he didn`t embarrass himself in center, but it`s his athleticism that had people mooning over him in the first place. A bad ankle kept him off the field for most of the year, sparing the Angels from having to bench him out of self-interest; offseason surgery is supposed to have him ship-shape for spring, but the Angels have finally moved on.
2006 Mike Scioscia is besotted with Erstad`s glove. To be fair, Erstad is a very good first baseman, so it`s not hard to see why his soft touch would beguile a manager. But Erstad`s bat is so bad that he cannot possibly save enough runs to make up for the lack of punch the Angels get from a power position. Example: Carlos Delgado had 116 equivalent runs, and -16 fielding runs (versus the average first baseman). Net result: 100 runs. Erstad had 68 equivalent runs and saved 12 runs above the average. Net result: 80 runs. There just aren`t enough difficult plays in any season for a pure glove man to make the sacrifice of offense worthwhile. This is especially true for the Angels; 153 games of .273/.325/.371 from first base just isn`t acceptable in a division with Mark Teixeira, Richie Sexson, and Dan Johnson, or any other division for that matter--this isn`t the Deadball Era.
2005 The Evil Bookend Erstads of April and September batted .265/.290/.333 and .202/.263/.269 respectively. After a hamstring-inspired month-plus on the DL—a godsend for the Angels because it gave Robb Quinlan a chance to play—Erstad returned hot and stayed that way from June through August, batting.346/.405/.484. Erstad's productive half-season and some good glovework at first made his season palatable for the Angels, but just barely. Mike Scioscia insists that Erstad's defense at first is enough of a benefit that no thought has been given to moving him back to center, where his bat wouldn't stick out as badly and his range would be emphasized. Even good managers have their weak points, this one is Scioscia's. An ironclad rule of the game: There is no excuse for playing a non-hitter at first base.
2003 He’s probably the most underrated defender in baseball, and possibly the most overrated hitter. Erstad has one excellent season. One. That’s it. Outside of that season, he’s hit like a fourth outfielder. But because of his good defense, marquee value, and the perception that he’s a scrappy, Pete Rose, hustling dude, Bill Stoneman saw fit to sign him to a contract for four years and $32 million. Granted, it’s not one of those really dizzyingly bad Mike Hamptonesque signings, but it’s not good. If you’re going to pay that kind of money and take that kind of risk, it should be for a better player than this.
2002 He's starting to look like vintage Howard Johnson, alternating good years and bad ones. Erstad followed up his career-year 2000 with a below-average performance last year, one that owed a lot to strained ligaments in his right knee. Erstad is a great defensive center fielder, and unless there's something about playing the position that gums up his works offensively, he's wasted anywhere else. A free agent after the season, he's likely to be elsewhere by the trade deadline.
2001 Darin Erstad had a great season, finally managing to hit for power while controlling the strike zone. Keeping him in the outfield helped; anyone would get tired of being moved between left field and first base, year after year, while trying to shake off a nagging hamstring injury. I think the projection is low.
2000 Erstad made the 1998 AL All-Star team off a dominant first half; he’s hit an empty .250 since. His poor second half in ’98 was due to a damaged hamstring. His 1999 had more to do with forgetting how to drive the ball. He then got frustrated and watched his plate discipline fall apart. It’s hard not to adjust expectations downward at this point, but Erstad’s basic skill set is still there, and I think he’s going to get back to the .285 EqA level. I’ll say it again: the Angels need to stick him in the outfield and leave him alone.
1999 His strained hamstring on August 3 did to the Angels what Tony Phillips' arrest for crack cocaine possession in 1997. It effectively ended their run as a good team. Erstad had played in every game up to that point and hit .303/.361/.513. He played in just 22 of 51 games afterwards, hitting .253/.300/.320, and the Angels, 59-52 when he pulled up lame, limped home at 26-25. Erstad's a very good player who would stand out much more as an outfielder.
1998 An impressive season. Handled the move to first, although his hands and footwork still need improvement. Playing him at first base is a waste; he’s a stellar defensive center fielder, and could be an MVP candidate if returned there. Gave us the best off-field story of the year: with an off-day following a game at Minnesota, he drove to his hometown in North Dakota to battle the flooding for a day, then returned to meet the team in Anaheim.
1997 Another excellent outfielder. One scout called him “The Jerry Rice of Baseball;” he doesn’t clock as particularly fast, but when the ball’s in the air he gets to it better than anybody. Defensive technique is excellent, batting stroke is extremely quick and vicious; the numbers and scouts agree. This guy will have a nice career, making a few appearances at the All-Star Game.

2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which BJ Upton do you think we see in 2010? I say this is the breakout where the glimpses of greatness far outweigh the stretches of inconsistency - thoughts?
(Walter from Tampa Bay)
Talk about one of the most maddening players in the game today. If you had to pick between Upton, Chris B. Young, and Delmon Young, I might still pick Upton as the most frustrating, not just because he's been frustrating for longer, but because of those same flashes of greatness and the expectation that there's a big corner that, once turned, will give us one of the game's best stars. At this point, he's not even Darryl Strawberry or Darin Erstad, former standards of high expectations not meeting actual performance as often as we might have liked. Which is the problem--if he "only" gets back to his 2008 level of production, people will keep anticipating more, when that's very good. That said, he's only just heading into his age-25 season, so I think there are more years like 2007 in him. I just don't expect it to be flipped on, like a switch. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)At this point, Jason Pridie is the Twins' extra outfielder. If they sign someone, who would be a good fit? I'm hoping it's not Darin Erstad, who has Gardenhire written all over him.
(russadams from Baffin Bay)
I'd be more afraid of Podsednik (on a self-avenging deal aimed at his former employers, a la Joe Crede), or Reed Johnson as a right-handed bat they could use all three outfield positions, and an overly imaginative reputation for speed and value in center. (Christina Kahrl)

(Tony from Brooklyn, NY)
It's kind of sad that we forget some of these players we turn into punchlines used to be pretty good. (Marc Normandin)
