2008 Off-season shoulder surgery delayed the start of Jeff DaVanon's 2007 season until July. After 33 plate appearances, the D'backs decided he was done, and after caiming him off waivers in August, the A's were apparently compelled to agree.
2007 When healthy, DaVanon is almost the perfect backup outfielder; he can handle center in a pinch, is enough of a bat to handle a corner, can run, take a walk, and hit for a bit of power. A late-season ankle injury derailed what was shaping up to be a nice year, but his injury hastened the arrival of Chris Young, which isn`t a bad thing. Originally in line for more playing time in 2007, particularly against righties, DaVanon won`t be ready to start the season following September surgery to repair the split tendon in his ankle.
2006 Fun with small sample sizes: DaVanon hit .393/.514/.536 in 28 at-bats against lefties; in 197 ABs against righties, he was a brutal .208/.322/.279. This was a reversal from 2004, when he batted .289/.383/.441 against righties but only .136/.240/.136 against lefties (in just 25 PAs). In 2003 the numbers were again reversed: .342/.457/.579 against lefties, .274/.346/.428 against righties. Assuming that DaVanon can recover his lefty stroke, the lesson here is that he`s a useful fourth outfielder, but one who may not be ideal in a strict platoon. D esignated for assignment in December, he`ll turn up as a reserve at a stadium near you.
2005 The rare student of Mickey Hatcher willing to shake hands with ball four. A member of the increasingly dominant subspecies of switch-hitters who aren't, DaVanon got a chance to play against righties when Garrett Anderson went down and did very well, batting .298/.393/.429 through the All-Star break, before back spasms cut his productivity and forced him out for 15 days. When he returned he wasn't quite the same player, in part because playing time was harder to come by. Still, he posted a .341 OBP after the break—DaVanon hurt reached base about as often as Darin Erstad healthy. Because he got a late start to his career, DaVanon's period of usefulness is going to be sadly brief, but for now he's a reserve who can be as good or better than the starters for periods of time.
2003 DaVanon has yo-yoed between levels for a while now, trying desperately to pick up and hold onto a fourth outfielder job. Remember, Jeff—they can smell fear. DaVanon plays defense acceptably well, plus he has some pop and can hit for a decent average. It may come down to just being in the right place at the right time, or picking up a key hit that sticks in someone’s mind. When it comes to the 25th man, there isn’t a whole lot of rhyme or reason to whether you make it or not.
2002 DaVanon is the best-hitting outfielder the Angels have in their system. He doesn’t really do anything well enough to hold down a major-league job, but he’ll provide some depth at the position and push a Triple-A team towards a title. Who can really tell the difference between Ballatore and Dom Perignon, anyway?
2000 DaVanon is the least valuable of the three players the Angels scored in exchange for Randy Velarde and Omar Olivares. He had no chance to make headway in the A’s chain, and isn’t in much better shape with the Angels, given all their outfielders. He’ll be in the mix for a utility job, trying to be the new Rex Hudler. A sane version.
