BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Statistically speaking, is it true that Canadian born MLBers perform the best of any nationality, including Americans, Dominicans, etc.?
(Mr. Chauvinist from toronto)
Larry Walker would agree. (Cory Schwartz)
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How will Larry Walker fare his first time on the HOF ballot? Will he get in eventually, and does he deserve to?
(David from CT)
As I wrote in that Vlad piece, Walker's a bit short too. He retired a bit early and didn't reach 400 homers despite his time in Colorado, where the stats prop up his case on the traditional merits a bit. I don't see him with an easy route to Cooperstown, and would be surprised if he fares better than 25-30% his first time around. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)So if the pitchers are an underwhelming lot, which interesting position players will we be talking about in one year?
(Grant from Nashville)
The top new position playing candidates are Jeff Bagwell, Rafael Palmeiro, John Olerud and Larry Walker. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)FYI, next couple of HOF classes are thin. Best candidates for 2011 are Bagwell, Raffy Palmeiro (zero shot), Kevin Brown, Al Leiter and Larry Walker. Best candidates for 2012 are Bernie Williams, Tim Salmon and....I dunno, Carl Everett? Rick Helling?
(El Angelo from elangelo@gmail.com)
The 2012 class is thinner than prison gruel. Honestly there aren't five guys among this lot who would get more than a single paragraph out of me in the JAWS series:

Edgardo Alfonzo, Pedro Astacio, David Bell, Jeromy Burnitz, Vinny Castilla, Scott Erickson, Carl Everett, Jeff Fassero, Alex S. Gonzalez, Danny Graves, Rick Helling, Dustin Hermanson, Jose Hernandez, Brian Jordan, Matt Lawton, Javy Lopez, Bill Mueller, Terry Mulholland, Jeff Nelson, Phil Nevin, Brad Radke, Joe Randa, Tim Salmon, Ruben Sierra, Jose Vizcaino, Bernie Williams, Eric Young (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Well, this is it: proof that Sheehan's really from Tokyo. He's just voided his lucrative BP contract, taken his bat & ball, & headed for home. Re. Suzuki: is this the most $ you can think of being just left on the table? I can think of guys passing down coin in new contracts (Latrell Sprewell anyone?), but not just punting on a current one.
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
There have also been guys who've walked away when they would clearly be able to get a lot of money, such as Will Clark, Larry Walker and Mike Mussina. Johjima's decision is surprising, and a fantastic gift for the Mariners. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking as a die-hard Yankee fan, if Mauer doesn't land the hardware, it'll be a disgrace. I wonder where Mauer's season ranks among all time seasons by a catcher?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
Tim Marchman did a piece on this for SI back in July, and he had Mauer done for the #2 slot behind Piazza's ridiculous 1997 season (one in which he lost the MVP to Larry Walker). I don't know what his qualifications for that were, but Piazza's '97, wow. (Marc Normandin)
2008-01-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on Colby Rasmus and when do you expect him in the majors.
(Mike from St.Louis)
In our celebrity Scoresheet League we ran last season, I drafted Rasmus late in the draft, and then when I needed to trade for a thumper late in the year, I traded Andrew McCutchen for Jim Thome rather than give up Rasmus. So I think he's a stud. If Jay Bruce is Larry Walker, Rasmus is Larry Walker Lite. Just temper your expectations for 2008. (Rany Jazayerli)
