2003 The Rockies find good relievers and theyíre usually stuck with them. Too many GMs canít see past the superficial scarring Coors can inflict on an ERA. For example, when the Rockies released Rick White in August, he cleared waivers. GMs took one look at his 6.20 ERA and blanched. But he had been very successful for the Rockies in 2001 and had been rated as one of the most underrated relievers in the league. His 4.11 road ERA in 2002 indicated he was still useful, but a bad showing at Coors blew up his overall numbers. Those who understand the Coors effect can pretend they donít and then use the inflated numbers to drive down the Rockiesí asking price until they have no choice but to get burned in the deal, release the player, or play him. The good news is that if their hitters ever come around, theyíll have a championship bullpen. Like Fuentes, Jimenez was much better at home last year. Of course exceptions donít prove rules; they disprove them. People just make far too much of the Coors effect.
2002 A one-inning closer is a luxury that the Rockies can't afford. Putting Jimenez, an ex-starter who would be a reasonable candidate to throw 90-100 innings in relief, in that role is a waste of resources. Shoulder problems limited him to 18 innings after the All-Star break; when he's healthy, he gets a ton of ground-ball outs. Look for him to bounce back in 2002.
2001 Jose Jimenez has started to develop a decent slider and forkball to complement his outstanding sinking fastball. Pitching as a closer, he rarely gets the work he needs to maintain his feel for anything but the sinker. Heíll continue to thrive in the closerís role, although heís cut out for a heavier workload than it provides.
2000 His amazing sinker makes him the ultimate one-trick pony, but mechanical problems kept even that from working consistently, as he'd leave it up where it could get hammered. When it does work, he can post stretches like the one in which he had five quality starts in six games, starting with the no-hitter. He's still learning to change speeds and get his slider working, and if he masters either, he'll stop redefining "maddening inconsistency." Moving to Coors, he'll be an interesting test case for how well an extreme groundball pitcher can succeed a mile up. Iím still optimistic about him, for no good reason.
1999 Thereís a considerable amount of argument about whether Jimenez is really a prospect. He has a great late-breaking sinker... and thatís it, except that he uses it to keep his infielders busy and his outfielders snoozing. Heís got a funky delivery and he throws strikes, but his stuff will never get much respect. With so many other problems on the major league staff, heís exactly the right kind of dark horse to ride in and claim a rotation spot, winning big if he has a tight infield and some run support. Iíve always liked one-trick ponies as long as the one trick is a showstopper.
