YearComment
2003 They’re bringing Estalella back as the caddy for Charles Johnson. Generally speaking, you want a catcher who’s durable, but Estalella has had surgery on both shoulders, and has never had more than 299 at-bats in a season. He’s cheap, but if Johnson breaks down again this probably isn’t a guy who can take over and take the daily pounding behind the plate.
2002 Sometimes, you get surprised by Paul LoDuca. Unfortunately, sometimes you get surprised by Bobby Estalella. Estalella's bat speed dropped precipitously in 2001, and he looked completely lost at the plate. He could have been one of the more valuable players in baseball last year: he was playing in a pitchers' park, coming into his age-26 season, and coming off a year with an 825 OPS. Instead, he cratered. He could well return to form, or he could be the second coming of Rick Wilkins.
2001 It's the Gabe Kapler of the catching profession! Bobby Estalella is a fine ballplayer who is only going to get better. Defensively, he's perfectly acceptable if not a virtuoso, and he can definitely smack the crap out of the ball. He's shown a bunch of skills in the majors and minors, and I see no reason to think that he can't start consolidating a few of those skills in single seasons for a few years. He will be at least a reasonable MVP candidate at some point during the next five years.
2000 Any way you look at it, last year was a major step back for him. He may regain some strength as he recovers further from his shoulder surgery, but he’s reverted to a “pull everything” approach that hurt his performance. He’s been traded to the Giants, where he should, at worst, split time with Doug Mirabelli.
1999 Really struggled in the majors, but that's an anomaly. He may not ever hit .300, but he'll draw walks, hit for power, and provide above-average defense. Went down over the winter with a torn rotator cuff, requiring major surgery. The best guess is that he’ll be able to play by late May, which at best means he could be ready for the majors by August.
1998 Grandson of a major leaguer and a fitness fanatic, quite a bit more was expected of him this year; instead, he had the same season for the third year in a row. You’d really like to see some improvement between 20 and 22; to be fair, though, it is major league caliber for the position, he’s good defensively and he has really poured on the cream in his two major league cups o’ coffee (a .381 EqA in about 50 PA). He will at least push Lieberthal this year, and could go right by him by ’99.
1997 In 1994, the grandson of ’40s outfielder Bobby Estalella was an overweight catcher going nowhere. He then embarked on a rigorous training and dietary regimen (stir frying vegetables in his hotel room on road trips) that gave him the lowest body fat percentage of anybody in the Philly organization, making him an exceptionally solid 200 pounds. He’s come on as a power hitter, but his average is low and strikeouts are high. His defense needs a lot of work; he is probably at least a year away from the majors, more likely two.
