2005 When the Royals were dreaming of another pennant run in 2004, Sullivan looked like a solid piece of bullpen depth. Now that the Royals are in the cellar, he's a luxury they'd like to jettison tout de suite. The reigning dean of sidearmers, he's still effective against right-handed hitters; left-handers, on the other hand, hit .355 and slugged .688 against him last year, which may explain his league-leading ten intentional walks.
2003 Sullivanís unprecedented four-year run of leading the majors in relief innings ended last year. He didnít succumb to the workload, but pitching through a Richie Sexson line drive off the elbow caused gopher balls and subsequent rotator cuff tendonitis. The Reds have already declined his 2004 option, so expect Boone to return to a no-holds-barred usage pattern. Sullivanís sidearming motion may allow him to dodge an arm blowout of Duane Ward proportions.
2002 Unobjectivity Alert: Sullivan is a favorite, in the same way that you had to love other sidearmers such as Kent Tekulve, Dan Quisenberry, and even Todd Frohwirth. With a tradition like that, itís almost a sin that Sullivan isnít funny-looking and doesnít bear an even funnier moniker. What matters is that it looks like his work on developing an off-speed pitch to freeze left-handed hitters was relatively successful, making him a better option for the primary setup role than he had been.
2001 He reversed his pattern last year. In 1998 and 1999, Scott Sullivan was worked hard and lost his effectiveness in September. Last year, he never got settled in the first half, but pitched very well after the All-Star break (although he did seem to tire again in September). There aren't many sidearm fly-ball pitchers, but he's one of them.
2000 Despite the ineffectiveness and fatigue that rendered him unavailable in September of 1998, Sullivan was once again worked like a dray horse in 1999, throwing 113 innings. He managed to stay healthy, but there was another drop in his effectiveness after July. Even sidearmers can get tired. With his peripherals in a slow retreat, I think heís in for a difficult 2000.
1999 Even sidearmers can be overworked, and Sullivan clearly showed the signs of overuse this season. I wouldn't count on his continued health if I were the Reds. Almost as troubling is that he gave up 12 homeruns to right-handers; thatís more Frohwirth than Quisenberry as far as sidearmers go.
1998 Took íem long enough. Sullivanís been waiting since mid-1995 for a shot, and was very effective while keeping a heavy workload in 1997. Sidearm motion will keep him healthy. I think heís going to be one of the National Leagueís most effective relievers for the next five years.
1996  Relief pitcher prospect, still probably a year removed froma substantial contribution. The Brantley injury may create an opportunity, but I don't think he's ready.
