2008 Reitsma had a second season in a row ruined by elbow surgery last year. It was initially thought that he might have a career-threatening degenerative condition, but reports after surgery were much more positive, indicating that his primary problem might have been scar tissue, rather than arthritis. Unswayed, the M's declined his 2008 option. Reitsma's record provides no clue why he's been so coveted throughout his career, but it's likely that some team will give him a chance to prove he's healthy this spring.
2007 In an awful snippet of a season, Reitsma somehow induced infield flies on over 20 percent of his fly balls, but saw another 25 percent clear the outfield wall. As Freddy Mercury in `Bohemian Rapsody,` `Any way the wind blows . . .` Shut down in July for ulnar transposition surgery, it`s not clear when he`ll be ready to pitch, or for whom. Reitsma was rumored to be in high demand after the Braves non-tendered him, but no one could really say why.
2006 After an uneven start to the year as the Braves` primary setup man, Reitsma inherited the closer role from Kolb and didn`t allow a run in his first month on the job. He chugged along, taking occasional lumps but converting 15 of his first 17 save opportunities, but shortly after the Farnsworth trade, Reitsma went through a rocky stretch, blowing three saves in ten days, after which he was forced to hand over the keys to the ninth inning and return to his setup role. Though his K rate dropped, his walk rate fell too, and he allowed just three homers all year. He doesn`t get a lot of love from Braves fans, but he should be back in 2006. Continuing a longstanding trend, he performed much better with a day of rest between outings (2.44 ERA) than when used consecutively (4.87 ERA).
2005 There are worse mid-grade middle men out there. Reitsma's been at least league average since going to the bullpen full-time in 2003, and that figures to continue.
2003 A young pitcher with options had as much chance of logging a full year of service in Cincinnati last year as Chico Escuela. Reitsma won’t become the ace that management once envisioned, but he needs better nurturing than Bob Boone’s whimsy for a fair assessment of how far short of the mark he’s going to fall. Reitsma’s sparkling September in relief could cause a blind squirrel/acorn scenario where Boone has him in the bullpen to open the season and slides him into the rotation later in the year.
2002 We were right in pegging Reitsma as a sleeper for last year’s rotation, but that’s one of the last times “right” and Reitsma will appear in the same sentence in reference to 2001. He made a good first impression with the velocity and movement on his fastball, his good change-up, and a couple of starts against the Pirates. It was downhill from there. Since coming back from losing two years to a broken elbow, he’s not throwing in the high 90s any more, but he is regularly in the low 90s. He’s not really in any danger of losing his rotation spot, it's just that he has to improve to do the Reds much good.
2001 After nursing him back to health and effectiveness, the Red Sox traded Chris Reitsma to the Reds for a month of Dante Bichette. Reitsma broke his elbow in 1997 and had never thrown 100 innings in a pro season before 2000. He's healthy now, with a good fastball and a change-up, and is working on a curve. He chewed up the Arizona Fall League and has to be considered a sleeper candidate for the Reds' rotation. 2002 looks like a real good year for him.
