2003 Mateo’s career path isn’t what would have been predicted three years ago, but he lost almost two years of critical development time shaking the effects of a broken femur suffered in 2000. The Reds have a very crowded outfield situation and can use the time bought by Wily Mo Pena’s hamstring woes to sift through the field of candidates. Mateo is clearly a better option as the first outfielder off the bench than Reggie Taylor, but the club isn’t sold on his ability to handle center field. Barring a major injury, somebody will be leaving town due to the roster crunch. Mateo probably still has the most trade value and could be sent packing.
2002 Acquired from the Rangers for Rob Bell in an exchange of problems, Mateo spent September working his way into shape in a tailored conditioning program; after fully evaluating him medically, the Reds feel he merely needed another year of conditioning to recuperate. They expect him to be at full strength in 2002, though there is some concern about whether he’s still treating the broken leg cautiously. Before the Reds blew it and traded for Encarnacion, Mateo had a shot at the job in right field.
2001 Ouchie. Ruben Mateo’s star has fallen dramatically due to injuries, but let’s step back a moment. He's just 23 years old and still has tremendous physical ability. He’s demonstrated the capacity to adjust as he moves into higher levels of competition. He’s held his own defensively in center field, and he’s still got a lightning-quick bat. I think he’s going to absolutely explode on the league, but probably not until late in the year. Of course, none of that talent matters if he can’t stay healthy, and there's some doubt whether Mateo can return from his broken leg. You have to be able to take the field to play on it.
2000 The two big concerns about Mateo are his lack of plate discipline and his fragility. The former is just part of the package; he should be an excellent hitter--if overrated--even with a poor walk rate. I don't know what to make of the latter. I know some bodies are just more brittle than others, but with Mateo I'm inclined to blame some of his fragility on bad luck; it's not as if he's injuring the same body part over and over. If healthy in 2000, he's the frontrunner for AL Rookie of the Year.
1999 I'm not concerned about the drop in his numbers. He was bothered by a shoulder injury in the first half, when he hit .223 with 6 HRs. In the second half he was healthy, and he hit .354 with 12 HRs. He's still the Rangers' top prospect, and still on track to become the next "next Roberto Clemente."
1998 Last year we touted him as a “tools guy” with the potential to be a good player rather than one that merely looks good. So he went out and did better in ‘97 than he did the year before. Awe-inspiring arm, only 20 years old. Needs to be more patient at the plate, but he walked more last year, giving hope that he could be a star.
1997 The best of four teenagers Texas brought to Charleston from the Dominican Summer League, scouts rave over him as a five-tooler. He’s fast, has a great arm (best in the league) and lacks plate discipline, but has age clearly on his side.
