2007 Another Red refugee who didn`t quite turn out the way people hoped, Brandon Larson`s now just another Trotskyite on the lam, hoping that whatever power he shows in more obscure circumstances will win him some small amount of favor.
2005 All the injuries of Austin Kearns, with a lot less talent. Larson's inability to stay healthy and his struggles on the rare occasions he's stayed upright have snuffed out any chance he may have had of claiming the major league third-base job. That's a shame—the 29 homers he socked in 348 at-bats over two levels at age 26 portended more. Now he'll need to catch a break just to stick on a big league bench.
2003 Anybody who tells you they saw that coming is lying. No team in baseball did, since the Reds took their 1997 first round pick off the 40-man roster in December 2001 and he went unclaimed. Laser eye surgery that enabled Larson to pick up the spin on a slider is credited for much of his progress. While batters with low walk and high strikeout totals aren’t good bets to succeed, they’re also the group most likely to have dramatic jumps in performance. At 27, we may have already seen the peak, but even if Larson gives a third of his improvement back, he still can help a team. To try to find a space for him in the lineup, the Reds had him work out at second base in the Florida Instructional League. They settled on handing Larson the third-base job, letting him settle in at his natural position.
2002 Larson was healthy for a second straight season; he just isn’t making progress. He’s credited with a good work ethic, shows decent range and a plus arm at the hot corner, and has absolutely no idea what he’s supposed to be doing at the plate. He’s been accused of pressing, but the accusation just lowers him into the Ryan Minor class of disappointments.
2001 Brandon Larson is a former #1 pick and a converted shortstop trying to make the majors on his power. Other than the pedigree--and the injury history of a Chechen soldier--there's nothing to separate him from a dozen other moderate-power, not-much-else prospects.
1999 Former #1 pick stalled out at Burlington before his season ended in June due to injury. Like so many other Red prospects, his major-league ETA is totally up in the air until we see if he's healthy.
