2009 Luke Hudson underwent shoulder surgery in spring training and was expected back around a month later, but continued soreness kept him out for the entire year; he refused an assignment to Triple-A after the season to become a free agent.
2008 The Royals went into spring training last year relying on Luke Hudson to be their third starter, but he made only one start before shoulder surgery ended his season. He's a longshot to make a full recovery, and he wasn't that good before he got hurt.
2007 Hudson was released by the Reds in spring training and designated for assignment by the Royals in early May before returning at the end of June. He was, nonetheless, the team`s best pitcher in the second half of the season. His turnaround started when his father and brother watched him pitch in Omaha and noticed he was throwing from a different arm slot than usual. He had shown flashes of being an effective starter with the Reds in 2004 before shoulder woes wrecked the following season. If healthy, he`s a cheap solution for the bottom of the rotation.
2006 Hudson spent the first half of 2005 on the DL with shoulder inflammation, a troubling sign for a pitcher who missed all of 2003 after surgery on his labrum. He can throw the speedball in the mid-90s, but his command isn`t usually good unless he takes something off of it, but that means taking risks when hitters set it on `dead red.` With a minus change-up, Hudson needs to harness his sharp breaking ball and learn better control if he is going to fulfill his potential.
2005 Another torn labrum casualty, the Reds didn't expect much from Hudson in 2004. But Tim's baby brother showed flashes of brilliance upon his return, regaining his plus fastball and terrifying curve in nine big league starts. The Reds would do well to keep him on a strict pitch count early in the year as he rebuilds the strength in his shoulder gradually. He's been a favorite of ours since we got a close-up view of his nasty stuff in the Arizona Fall League in 2002, so we're pulling for him.
2004 Because he missed all of 2003 after surgery to repair a torn labrum, the Reds get another option on Hudson. One front-office member liked him enough to invoke Mark Prior's name, for Hudson's size and fastball/curveball repertoire. Like Prior, Hudson has a change-up that he doesn't use much. He'll start the 2004 season at Trip le-A, getting reps in after his lost season, and might still end up as a reliever. If healthy-a big if-he'll be very good.
2003 Essentially a throw-in from Colorado when Bowden dumped Pokey Reeseís contract, Hudson immediately displayed the best arm in the upper reaches of the Redsí system. He looks a bit like Mark Prior on the mound, with moving mid-90s heat exploding from a silky delivery. While improving, Hudsonís pitchability isnít so similar, even though he has pared his repertoire down to a fastball and curve. Eight overpowering weeks in the Arizona Fall League has led to speculation that he could go Williamson on the NL this summer. There are always plenty of relief innings to go around with Bob Boone at the helm, and Hudson enters camp as the front-runner to absorb some of the excess. However, wait for some early returns before checking his name for Rookie of the Year on your IBA ballot.
