2007 Somewhere, Joe Sheehan is still expecting Jose Acevedo to break out; whether due to poor coaching, lack of sufficient talent, or Acevedo`s own intractability, it never happened.
2006 Last year we pointed out that Acevedo had a 6.65 ERA as a starter and 0.00 as a reliever. In 2005, it was 8.87 as a starter, 4.87 in relief, and while those numbers continue the trend, 4.87 isn`t a number that brings gentlemen callers to anyone`s doorstep. Acevedo still has his odd combination of command and gopheritis, and with his strikeout numbers dropping, he`ll have to fight to hang on as the designated long reliever and spot starter.
2005
AcevedoIPHHRBBKERA
As Starter140.218130441076.65
As Reliever17701100.00

At first glance you might be inclined to discount those numbers due to small sample size, and 17 innings doesn't tell us everything we'd want to know, especially when they're mostly September innings. But Acevedo also limited hitters to a .254/.287/.361 AVG/OBP/SLG on pitches 1-15 of a game; he got strafed at a .301/.355/.507 rate the rest of the time. Even accounting for some of those 1-15 pitches being thrown in relief, that's still a telling trend; the Reds say Acevedo pared his repertoire after switching to relief, to rave reviews. It's a tough call for the organization: They're starved for quality starting pitching, and Acevedo has maintained strong K/BB rates throughout his major league and minor league career. But while his hit rate will come down (he yielded an abnormally high .318 average on balls in play), Acevedo's shown an inability to keep the ball in the park (1.7 HR/9 IP in 304.1 big league innings) that's killed his best efforts. Don Gullett and company need to go the extra mile to solve Acevedo's gopheritisóa good reliever is handy to have around, but there's a front-line starter begging to come out here.
2003 Hammered in two brief early season stints, the Reds exiled Acevedo to Louisville for the rest of the year. Although the demotion smacked more of disgust than player development, it was the proper tonic for Acevedoís disorders. He tightened his command and began thinking of pitching as a craft instead of mere physical activity. That Acevedo wasnít recalled when the rosters expanded indicates that the organization has soured on him. Heís ready to help someone at the major league level.
2002 Even after a good showing in his debut season, Acevedo is fighting for the fifth slot in the rotation, his opportunity depending on how many retreads take the Redsí offers to jump-start their careers by working with Don Gullett. Itís just as well, because Acevedo didnít do much against good lineups or playoff teams, mostly beating weaker teams such as the Expos and Pirates. A four-pitch starter with no single dominant offering, Acevedo was credited with doing a better job of trusting his fastball. His long-term future looks good.
