2003 Is it a sinker, slider, splitter, or a scuffball? Whatever Williams uses to get hitters out, he did it again in 2002. His 46 saves ranked third among big league pitchers, an impressive statistic for a guy whose club won just 72 games. Now would be the ideal time to trade Williams, who is both cheap and effective, but the Pirates donít seem to want to go that route. Too bad. Turning 35 this year, heís not going to get any better and an injury could reduce his value to zero. The Bucs donít have the luxury of keeping a veteran closer when their needs are so great.
2002 If thereís a pitcher who has contributed more to debunking the perceived value of the closeróbesides a desperately old Jeff Reardonóit might be Mike Williams. He went from being a popular organizational soldier with the Phillies to nice fifth starter to steely closer through little more than changes of scenery. Williams is extremely tough on right-handed hitters, but his problems with lefties make him better suited for co-chairman in a bullpen by committee than for relief ace.
2001 To his credit, Mike Williams pitched much better than the low save total indicates. Since he isnít likely to be part of the next good Pirate team, they need to trade him before the one-trick (slider) pony loses its charm, but that low save total may reduce his trade value. He was one of the Piratesí only effective relievers in 2000, and heíll remain the closer until heís dealt or completely implodes.
2000 Williams was untouchable in the season's first two months, mediocre in the next two, and so bad in August that he lost the job four months later. The league was bound to catch up to his one pitch (a very good slider) even if he hadn't lost control of it. He's unlikely to see his 1998 level of success again.
1997 He did a good job for the Phillies in 1995, mostly in relief. So when injuries wiped out the real starting rotation in 1996, he got his chance to take a regular turn. This turned out to not be a good idea.
1996  The organization has been in love with his loyalty and workmanlike attitude for a while. He's earned a reputation as a five-inning starter in the minors, losing both velocity and control late in games, which means he's only really suited for the fifth starter/swing role on a major league team.
