2013 After having not pitched in the big leagues since 2009, Kip Wells became part of the Padres rotation toward the end of June ostensibly because Juan Eichelberger wasn't available.
2010 Over the last four seasons, Wells has pitched for seven teams and posted a 5.79 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP. Why he keeps getting opportunities is beyond us. Prior to the Reds, his last three teams released him after less than a full season of work, yet he just keeps catching on. Maybe there’s still some first-rounder shine on him somewhere, but we can’t see it. He has never struck out twice as many men as he’s walked in a season, and over the last two, he’s walked 70 against 74 Ks. Even his best season, with the Pirates in 2003, wasn’t all that great. He’s already been through Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Washington, so our guess is he splits 2010 between Baltimore and San Diego in his game-wide basements tour.
2009 Heady with the theft of Ramon Ramirez from the Rockies in spring training, the Royals kept going back to the same well throughout the season, but to less effect. Wells became the fourth reliever to move from Colorado to KC in 2008 when he signed with the Royals in August after getting released by the Rockies. He made $3.1 million last year, but will be lucky to get a spring training invite in 2009, as he hasn't posted a WHIP below 1.5 in the majors since 2003.
2008 There were the elements of a Dave Duncan tent revival here-a pitcher coming off surgery who had some success in his past, but had lost his way prior to getting hurt-but Wells just didn't have enough stuff to work with, and his command has never been a strong suit. He signed a one-year deal with Colorado; if he gets a little better in his second year past surgery, the Rockies' defense could make him a reasonable fifth starter.
2007 No sooner had Wells escaped the Pirates gulag than he sprained his foot and landed on the DL. Any injury to a pitcher that does not involve a moving part on an upper appendage seems like a minor inconvenience at best. Healthy or otherwise, Wells has struggled with his control. If Dave Duncan can get that rectified to some extent, he`ll be an asset for the Cardinals.
2006 Wells` history of spotty control went from unfortunate to even worse last season. In recent years, only Kaz Ishii and Victor Zambrano (among IP qualifiers) can rival the lack of control Wells showed last season. Walking one of every six lefty batters he faced in `05 is no way for a major league starter to make a living. Wells is 29, his ERA has increased substantially in each of the last two seasons, and he really hasn`t been the same pitcher since battling elbow problems in 2004. He ranks among the game`s biggest disappointments in 2005, and it`s time to accept that we`ve already seen his best. If he has a hot first half, the Bucs would do well to flip him for goodies at the deadline.
2005 Wells had something of a lost season. Although he remained hard to hit, command of his pitches became a problem as his fingers started bothering him. Surgery to repair his carpal-tunnel syndrome appears to have left him none the worse for wear, and might even earn him some sympathy among the fourth estate. He'll be fully back in form, giving the Pirates a good front pair with Perez.
2003 Wells doesn’t have an outstanding pitch, but he can get to the mid-90s with his sinking fastball, though his comfort zone is lower. He also has an average curve and average slider, but he lacks a change or split to keep hitters off-balance. When Wells keeps the ball down consistently, he can win. He anchored a mediocre Pirates staff in 2002; despite an 8–2 record at the end of May, Wells captured just four games afterward, though he pitched nearly as well in the second half as he did in the first.
2002 The Sox probably put too much on Wells following his great September 1999 performance, starting him in the majors in 2000 despite his having very little experience above A ball. One of our favorite sayings—"There's no such thing as a pitching prospect"—is mostly about injuries, but never underestimate the ability of an organization to mess up the rare healthy one. Last year, Wells worked his way back into the rotation, but after some second-half beatings, found himself in the bullpen and a near-constant state of flux mechanically. The Pirates did a great job of buying low; Wells could be their #1 starter by the All-Star break.
2001 Kip Wells was supposed to contend for the Rookie of the Year Award last year. He was demoted after three bad months, struggled in Charlotte before having a good August, and then was recalled down the stretch while injuries were wiping out the staff. He hides his pitches well with a deceptive delivery, tossing a nasty curve--sometimes even for strikes. He also had some arm problems late in 2000, and after logging 191 2/3 innings as a 22-year-old in his first pro season, there’s reason for concern. He must be taking fielding tips from Matt Young, because he has seven errors and eight assists in his brief major-league career.
2000 The team's first-round pick in 1998, who signed for a $1.5 million bonus after a protracted holdout, is already one of the best pitching prospects in the game. Baseball America's polling named him the best prospect in the Carolina League and third-best in the Southern League, after only 14 starts in the former and 11 starts in the latter. Unlike a lot of top college pitchers, Wells has great velocity, better than most pitchers anywhere. He also has an off-the-table curve and a slider he can throw at any point in the count. Rookie pitchers are always tough to predict--witness Jeff Weaver--but Wells will be in the Sox rotation, and has a great shot to be the 2000 AL Rookie of the Year.

DateQuestionAnswer
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given Manny Acta's limited options, is he going to stick with Joel Hanrahan at closer after his awful start, or is he going to give a guy like Jason Bergmann a shot (a failed started with good stuff and health issues)?
(Peeig13 from The Second City)
This is my darkhorse for the Nationals' closer: Kip Wells. His results have never matched his stuff as a closer and a lot of times many pitchers who fit that profile wind up being good closers for a time. Eric Gagne is a prime example. (John Perrotto)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi John, Is your Kip Wells closer theory based on inside information or is it pure speculation? Thanks. Joe
(Swingingbunts from NY)
Theory. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Pirates can still trade one of our... er, I mean their bevy of pitchers for Ryan Howard? Oh how I yearn for 2004.
(Darven Lithelifeld from Anonymous South Side Bar)
yeah, maybe Kip Wells. LOL (John Perrotto)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I correct to be more than a little scared about the Rockies rotation? After Cook and Francis, I see some very talented youngsters who probably need more seasoning and are likely overrated for their great stretch at the end of 2007 (Morales and Jimenez).
(Dan from Denver)
Put it this way: better to place your faith in Jimenez, Hirsh, and Morales than to have any confidence in Kip Wells or Mark Redman. You're right, this is definitely a problem area, one that figures to take the Rockies back out of the playoff picture if two of those three youngsters don't pan out. (Christina Kahrl)
