2009 Mackowiak was slow getting started out of spring training and never settled in, only to be cut before the injury epidemic began to ravage the team. The Reds picked him up to provide Triple-A depth, platooning him to avoid lefties, and he immediately ran off an 18-game hitting streak at Louisville to prove that he wasn't completely done.
2008 The Padres brought in a lot of players in 2007 who won't be with them in 2008. Look back at the last couple of pages: Bradley, Ensberg, Marcus Giles, Lane. They tried to let Barrett leave, but he wouldn't go. Mackowiak was another late-season pickup for the bench, but he went down with a sports hernia in September. He'll serve in a utility role for the Nationals this year, and is a good fit for their heavily right-handed team.
2007 Mackowiak deserves praise for his extraordinarily consistent performances despite constant shifts in his position and role. Nevertheless, with his defense becoming more problematic, Mackowiak`s opportunities for playing time are more a barometer for his team`s performance than him own. If Rob Mackowiak gets 150 at-bats, all went according to plan. If gets 450 at-bats, something went horribly wrong. Last year, Mackowiak finished in the bottom half of that range with 255 ABs; accordingly, the White Sox`s offense had a year that met, but did not exceed expectations.
2006 Mackowiak is stretched as a regular, but his ability to play six different positions, modest on-base chops, and gap power make him a useful part of any roster. In December, the White Sox acquired him for Damaso Marte, getting themselves a better insurance policy than previous reserves Timo Perez, Willie Harris, and Pablo Ozuna. Credit Kenny Williams with knowing that complacency is a champion`s archenemy.
2005 An easy favorite in Steeltown, in that he can play six positions and makes for a nifty spare part. There might be a bit of a rush to compare to him to John Lowenstein, another infielder who turned into a platoon masher with an uppercut stroke. It's more probable that Mackowiak just had a career year, courtesy of a great May spiked with a trip to Coors Field. He deserves a crack at the job at third, but if the Pirates feel they have to show something for Kris Benson, he'll have to settle for staying in the supersub role.
2003 A hustling “can-do” guy from Chicago, Mackowiak performed far better in 2002 than anyone could have anticipated. This doesn’t mean that he was especially good—Mackowiak really only looks good in a Pittsburgh context. Nor should he have been playing regularly, especially in center field, where he started 37 times. He’s probably won himself a roster spot for a few seasons, but if he ends up taking time away from prospects who are ready to jump to The Show, someone should be canned.
2002 The Pirates’ inability to tell the difference between Mackowiak and a real baseball player is very disturbing. Lloyd McClendon’s willingness to play him in the outfield is terrifying, especially since Mackowiak isn’t an asset defensively, either. He gets the uniform dirty, low walk totals be damned. Rico Washington deserves this roster spot, and Tony Alvarez has some claim to it as well.
2001 He's someone you want to root for. Rob Mackowiak was a 53rd-round pick in 1996 who plays hard, works his tail off, and can field three positions (four if the experiment with him behind the plate works). He even has a little pop in his bat, slugging .478 against right-handers. So what’s the problem? Twenty-two walks last year, just eight off his career high, mean he’s really no different than most of the Pirates’ other bench options.
