2017-04-11 19:00:00 (link to chat)Sam Travis seems like a legitimate person of interest. I would like for you to tell me how he will fare next year as the Red Sox starting 1b. Thanks for your time.
(Hello from Here)
Hello!

Two caveats that apply to this question and prospect questions generally:
1. I am not on the prospect team; and
2. As a White Sox fan/writer, my perspective has become skewed over the years. Given their organizational strengths with pitchers (and unusual pitchers at that) and crushing weakness at developing hitters (I think Aaron Rowand is the last plus position player the White Sox have drafted and graduated to the majors), I tend to err positive on arms and negative on bats--although...with a much lower bar for what I deem to be a success.

All of that said, I find it hard to imagine that the Red Sox would enter 2018 with Travis as their starting first baseman. Given the presence of both Hanley and Sandoval (and potentially Swihart?), as well as their general aspirations for excellence, a fringe-power profile like Travis seems like a Plan B or C for the position rather than Plan A. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-03-30 20:00:00 (link to chat)Will Moreland hit enough to keep Sam Travis waiting in the wings? Travis might not provide quite as much defensive value, but it doesn't seem far-fetched to expect him tp demonstrate he'll outgrow Pawtucket before long.
(Oliver from Boston)
Yes, I think Moreland will be able to hold off Sam Travis. I like Moreland more than most as a boring but reliable player. And maybe temper your expectations for Travis since he wasn't even ranked on several industry prospect lists and was ranked around # 100 on the ones where he was ranked. (Scooter Hotz)
2015-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better future 1B for your dynasty team: a. Matt Olson b. Sam Travis c. find another option, dude!
(J. Lydon from London)
Depends on the league. If it's a standard one that includes batting-average, Travis. If it's OBP, Olson. If it's none of those things, you play in a weird league. I like both guys quite a bit. (Christopher Crawford)
2014-08-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)1B Sam Travis have any real chance to the starting 1B in Bos someday?
(mdotmorris22 from Minnesota)
Yes! (Matthew Kory)
2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)Does your fellow Hoosier Sam Travis have a shot at becoming an MLB regular 1B for the Sox?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
The rule of 1B prospects applies here. He's going to have to hit and hit and hit and hit. I'd bet against it. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Will Sam Travis play 1b in the pros or does he have a shot at sticking at 3b?
(Chris from Chicago)
For me it's first base, but I've heard left field from a couple of midwest guys. Haven't heard real support for him at the hot corner. (Pre-Draft Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
