BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Christian Binford's best tool—pinpoint fastball command—deserted him last year, as the towering righty walked more men than he whiffed in Omaha and continued to struggle after a demotion to Double-A. He's young enough to adjust, but his low-velocity repertoire will always walk a razor line.
2015 Binford stood out in the Wilmington rotation last year, both for his towering build and for a level of production that dwarfed more heralded prospects Miguel Almonte and Sean Manaea. He stood out at the Futures Game, too, as the former 30th-round pick is a low-velocity strike-thrower whose upper-80s fastball seemed out of place among the gaudy tools on display in Minneapolis. Binford knows how to pitch, commands his fastball well and has a serviceable slide piece, though his changeup still lags. He held his own in Double-A but struggled in a brief bullpen audition in Omaha; still, that the Royals were considering him to bolster their relief corps down the stretch highlights the progress he's made. If he continues to avoid walks and miss a few bats he could eventually slot in at the end of a big-league rotation, though a career in middle relief seems more likely.
2014 Lexington's Pitcher of the Year, lanky Christian Binford has shown positive command and healthy groundball rates in his brief minor-league career.

2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Favorite James Shields clubhouse story?
(Nike from Doit)
There's a good one involving Christian Binford and ice cream, but I'll probably save that for next spring training. (Andy McCullough)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Do Christian Binford and Jonathan Dziedzic of Wilmington profile mostly as relievers at the highest level, or is there a chance for them in the rotation of (hopefully) good teams?
(Bill from Bozeman)
Binford is swing/long man for me with a chance to be a 5th starter if he can add some mustard to the mix. After watching him in person, his numbers are definitely better than his scouting report. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)How strong is the Royals crop of young arms including Kyle Zimmer, Miguel Almonte, Jason Adam, Christian Binford, Sam Selman, and new acquisitions Brandon Finnegan and Foster Griffin? BTW, what can you tell me about Selman as he doesn't seem to get as much press as the others? Cheers
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
it's very strong. I really like Almonte and believe Adam will continue to progress. I like Finnegan quite a bit too. if Zimmer could prove healthy, then the crop would be even stronger. Given the control problems, I am not convinced Selman is a starter long term, and that's the biggest reason you don't hear more about him nationally. (Mark Anderson)
