YearComment
2003 He had a fine season, and we enjoyed the all-Franco platoon as much as anyone else, but when your first baseman against right-handed pitchers is Matt Franco, your GM has got to get his hands back on the wheel.
2001 He's the Mets' answer to Dave Hansen, but when the team traded for Lenny Harris, Matt Franco found himself back in Triple-A. Pay no attention to the performance line; as we've said a thousand times, it's impossible to evaluate pinch hitters based on one season's numbers. Franco is a good early-inning pinch hitter who can spell a right-handed-hitting corner man twice a month.
2000 In nature, everything from a hawk to a crow to an elephant to an amoeba has its niche to fill in the environment, even if human eyes can't always tell what it is. Franco, who can't hit or field well enough to be a regular, has taken to the pinch-hitter role and fills it well. He set a new record by drawing 20 pinch-walks and he played five positions in emergencies, including pitching twice. It pays better than Wal-Mart.
1999 When you have two pitchers in your lineup every day, you need to keep plenty of pinch-hitters around.
1998 Had the misfortune of having a great year pinch-hitting, and so will head down the John VanderWal and Dave Hansen career paths, rather than getting a chance to play a more significant role. Hey, at least it’s a career path. Franco’s not going to move Alfonzo, but he can help a team as a spot third baseman and pinch-hitter for a few years to come.
1997 He has been, and is, a good hitter, even if he hasn’t become the power hitter he was drafted to be. With the Cubs he was stuck behind Mark Grace so they tried him at third base; the charitable thing to say is, he improved this year. Needs to be on an AL team. Released.
1996  He could be a useful fill-in or utility infielder, and has a pretty good shot of making the team. His best position is first, but he can get by at third or second better than HoJo.
