2016 That Quinn missed a significant chunk of a season due to injury is, sadly, unsurprising at this point. What was heartening, however, is that the time spent on the field was arguably his most productive to date. A tear in his left hip flexor sidelined Quinn from mid-June through the end of the Double-A season, after initial reports suggested only a quad strain, but he returned to make up for some missed plate appearances in the Dominican Winter League. He strikes out more than is desirable, given his prodigious speed, and his stolen-base efficiency took a step backward even prior to the injury, but his switch-hitting and modest defensive ability in center field—his time at shortstop is over—make him the perfect old-school leadoff archetype. Whether he'd assume that role for the Phillies is something that's far too early to call; he'll need a full, healthy season before that's really a discussion worth having.
2015 The easy comparison is to Ben Revere, but that's lazy—beyond superspeed and body type, there's not much there. Quinn, like you, has more power than Revere, but doesn't make as much contact, and is therefore more likely to put up empty .260s than empty .305s. He makes the exciting play but is, in the dull stretches that make up life, nothing special. His reads aren't great on the bases. At his age, there is time for development, but it would take some unforeseen evolution to turn him into the sort of valuable player who future speedsters are lazily compared to.
2014 Measured purely by excitement, Quinn might very well have been the most thrilling prospect in the Phillies' system. This says nothing about his quality as a player or his likelihood of making the majors, but he's been fun to watchjust look up his 14-second trip around the bases on an April inside-the-parker. His speed has drawn legit comparisons to that of Billy Hamilton, and he might reach triple-digits stolen base totals if given enough playing time. The Phillies drafted him out of high school in the second round in 2011, and he has handled the low minors well, stealing 30-plus bases in each of two half seasons. Then he went and ruptured his Achilles tendon in an offseason workout, which will cost him at least the first half of 2014. If Plan B involves developing power, Quinn is in trouble.
2013 Tabbed as the fastest player in the 2011 draft, Quinn is an emerging middle-infield prospect the Phillies feel has enough upside in his bat to become a first-division, top-of-the-order hitter. They will leave him at shortstop as long as they can, though if he doesnt fully develop there, center field is a real option. For obvious reasons, his skills and potential positions have led to comparisons with both Michael Bourn and Jimmy Rollins. A breakout in his full-season debut would have him shooting up prospect lists for 2014.

DateQuestionAnswer
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some of your favorite late-round targets heading into 2017?
(Casey from Fargo)
I think someone like Jose Peraza or Roman Quinn bc of their ability to steal bases are intriguing. Playing time is the big variable. (George Bissell)
2016-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank MLB future for Naquin, Toles, Nimmo and Roman Quinn. Who has the best bat of these four?
(Bip from LA)
Despite being the guy with the most major league experience, Naquin is still weirdly risky to me. It feels like pitchers started to exploit him more as the season went on, and that is a lot of swing-and-miss, even in this era. That said, you'd probably sign on for Nimmo to turn into Naquin now, no? Toles is the better hitter, but tough to be a corner guy with below-average power. I love Quinn, but I would be cautious until he plays a full season healthy. I guess Toles, Naquin, Quinn, Nimmo. Not particularly confident in the order of the first three though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Roman Quinn hit enough to be a starting OF in Philly?
(Phil Lees from Philly)
I do. In fact, I think he might hit enough to hit at the top of the lineup, and with that speed, that could be ideal. There's very little power, but his ability to get on and steal bases makes him a potential 50 player. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-08-24 20:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on David Dahl---how good can he become in Colorado? Also, do you think Roman Quinn can hit enough to be an electric leadoff hitter for the Phils----starting sometime next year?
(misterbob from pa)
I love Dahl. I think he can put up some tremendous numbers there, and he could do it starting right now, certainly next year.

Regarding Roman Quinn, I'm not sure he'll ever hit or get on base enough in the majors to be an electric leadoff hitter. He could have a season or two with big stolen base numbers, though. I still just don't love his ability to get to first base. And if he does get there, it won't be next year. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-05-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it realistic for Nick Williams and Roman Quinn to be starting outfielders for Philadelphia in 2017?
(Rick from San Diego)
The game is trending so young, nothing would surprise me. So I would say yes, it's realistic. (Jim Walsh)
2016-05-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hello, How would you compare and contrast Roman Quinn and a younger Billy Hamilton at similar points in their careers? They seem to be very similar players from a tools standpoint (speed) )but I think Quinn can become a better overall offensive player----what are your thoughts about that?
(misterbob from pa)
That's not a bad comp for Quinn and I agree that the bat has a chance to be better than Hamilton's with a touch more pop and fewer strikeouts. (James Fisher)
2016-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Roman Quinn and Dave Dahl? Can Quinn hit enough to be a major SB factor at the top of the Phils lineup, and can Dahl overcome the injury issues to be a 5 tool guy for the Rockies? Thx.
(misterbob from pa)
No, Quinn won't hit enough. Could be a nice little second leadoff hitter, I guess. Dahl, I have much more faith in. Too soon to get giddy, but Dahl isn't far from the big leagues, or from making a difference there. (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-04-19 12:00:00 (link to chat)Phillies outfielders have put up a combined OPS+ of -3 this season. Is this the worst outfield ever assembled? And what does this mean for the timeline for Nick Williams and Roman Quinn?
(DPettyBraves29 from Syracuse, NY)
It's not good, that's for sure. The Opening Day lineup was tough to get enthused about; you could make the argument this team has some Triple-A aspects. However, the Phillies have assembled a great group of both new-and-old-guard people to turn this ship around. They knew--everyone knew--this season was going to be tough; as such, I think some of the things that could be said about individual player performances aren't as valid.

Like I said, it's a quality group in that front office, and especially after watching a really impressive lineup at Double-A Reading over the weekend, this might come together a little quicker than some thought (still at least 3-4 years) on the strength of exciting young players.

The Phillies are 100% in rebuild mode right now, so I don't think any lack of production by the big club would be worth impacting the development of Williams, Quinn, Cozens, or any other player they have high hopes for. All three of those guys I mentioned need plenty more minor league reps, though there's no denying if it clicks for any one of them--if not more than one--it could be an extremely exciting outfield of the future.

I tweeted this over the weekend, speaking of Cozens: the guy has more raw power than any player I've seen so far during the minor league regular season. There's a ton of questions about his hit tool and ability to use the other field--and remember, raw power only goes so far--but gosh. The guy just hits the crap out of the baseball. I saw him hit an incredibly impressive bomb (ironically, the other way) that was a no-doubter onto the LF concourse on Saturday. His other game contact was explosive, too. (Adam McInturff)
2015-09-21 20:30:00 (link to chat)Roman Quinn - Odds of everyday player by July 2017
(Davin from Pittsburgh )
In the majors? 30 percent. Anywhere? 80 percent. (Bret Sayre)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Mallex Smith or Roman Quinn?
(jeff from san berdoo)
I'll go with Quinn here. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Does Roman Quinn hold any intrigue as a CF, or is the bat in need of too much strengthening?
(Mike from Holden, MA)
Some, Ben likes him much more than I do. I don't think there's enough hit there to become much more than a guy who steals bases and hits for an empty low average. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-10-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the outlook for Roman Quinn at this point? The Achilles injury was terrifying, but it appears he's back on track.
(ithmus from New York)
He's done being a SS, both because it was a work in progress and because he's on the same developmental track as JP Crawford. He's a CF for now, where his top-end speed should play well. I didn't see him after he switched positions, but I'll get a look at the defense in the AFL in a few weeks.

I don't know if he's going to hit though. He embraces the small ball/speed game, so that's good, but there are some holes in his swing(s). He doesnt have much power but he doesnt get the bat knocked out of his hand either. Speed is awesome, but he has to get on base to make it play. He's also not a very good base stealer/runner for a guy who is so fast. He makes all kinds of mistakes. The package is nice but he still has a long way to go. (Jeff Moore)
2014-03-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on Roman Quinn? If or when will be become a regular and what does he bring to the table?
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
A guy whose game is predicated on speed ruptured his Achilles. To say the least, I am not optimistic right now. (Ronit Shah)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why aren't you telling people to buy low on Roman Quinn yet?
(Ben C from Boston)
Because he can't hit. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you don't consider yourself a fantasy baseball guy but I've based a lot of my minor league keeper decisions on your prospect evaluations at BPN in the past. I have Gustavo Cabrera and Roman Quinn who have both been seriously injured this offseason. I have 3 extra players rostered to chose from to replace them: Sean Newcomb, Touki Toussaint, Jacob Gatewood. Which two are your favorite? Highest ceilings?
(Matt from Charm City)
It never ceasese to amaze me that fantasy leagues are now digging into undrafted guys.

I would lean Toussaint and Gatewood, but that's not a firm answer, just because so much can change between now and draft day, let alone now and A-ball. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts about Roman Quinn's potential?
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
Nil. I hate pure speed guys as prospects. Hate 'em. (Sam Miller)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)80 tools are rare. We hear a lot about guys with 80 power (Gallo, Sano), 80 speed (Billy Hamilton and less speedy 80-speedsters), 80 defensive profiles (Hedges), 80 bat speed (Baez) and 80 arms (Bethancourt). Are there any guys you can think of who have 80s that are a bit unheralded?
(Derek from Buffalo Grove)
Not really, I've seen Roman Quinn an 80 runner, but most guys with 80 tools you hear a lot about. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are Lewis Brinson, Blake Swihart and/or Roman Quinn candidates for the top 101 in the offseason?
(dmartinez87 from NY)
Brinson and Swihart, no doubt. I'm not as high on Quinn. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Roman Quinn the real deal and how would you rank him against the other super speedsters, Hamilton and DeShields?
(cal guy from cal)
He could be in time, but not yet. He's well behind the other two. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Roman Quinn, SS PHI? I've seen some pretty handsome analysts hype him up from a Fantasy POV.
(BenC22 from TDG)
Come again for Big Fudge? (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Zach Mortimer gave some promising notes on Roman Quinn in his Notes from the Field column. Do you think he's got a real shot to be a top 100 prospect next year? More?
(Broken Arrow from Texas)
It's possible. He's very, very fast, and if the bat has more meat than just a slapper, he could certainly jump up prospect lists. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Did Roman Quinn get any consideration?
(Behemoth from Scotland)
Not really. He's very fast. Big questions about the bat. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speedsters Delino Deshields Jr. and Roman Quinn are (understandably) caught in the shadow of Billy Hamilton's dust. How do you see them in terms of their big league futures?
(Francois from Toronto)
The prospect staff recently ranked Delino DeShields Jr fourth in the Astros system. He grades as an 80 runner, and should be a huge stolen base option in fantasy should he put it together and reach the majors. His play last year provides more optimism for his rough 2011 season. As for Quinn, his speed is also game changing. There is a big gap between what he is and what he can become. Don't expect him to be an impact fantasy player in the near future, but he certainly warrants monitoring in dynasty leagues. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-10-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Roman Quinn, he put up some of the best numbers in the NY-P league and it seems he might be able to stick at SS?
(MattWinks from Philly)
He hit pretty well in the New York-Penn League, and demonstrated his plus-plus speed with 30 steals and 11 triples, but his work at shortstop still leaves something to be desired. Wouldn't be surprised to see him moved to center field. (Bradley Ankrom)
