DateQuestionAnswer
2014-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's the best RHP prospect in the Twins system? Jose Berrios, Kohl Stewart, Alex Meyer or someone else? Thanks Ethan!
(Nils from Minneapolis)
I did not get a look at any Twins affiliates this season, but the reports I've gotten on Berrios have been enormous. The stuff is filthy with a slider that could be a difference maker. Not saying he's the best of the bunch here; again, I didn't get eyes on any of these guys this season. We'll line them up for you this offseason. (Ethan Purser)
2014-08-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)Which top 25 prospects have a better than 50-50 shot at getting called up to the Bigs come September?
(Paul from DC)
I'd say Archie Bradley and Alex Meyer are the obvious ones. Maybe Noah Syndergaard and/or Francisco Lindor. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Alex Meyer as a solid rotation piece or as a bullpen guy?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Solid rotation piece, I think he will be more mid to backend though. (Tucker Blair)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)With JO Berrios and Kohl Stewart hopping Alex Meyer on this list, is that an indictment of the future of Meyer or just that Berrios/Stewart have had better years as opposed to Meyer's inconsistency?
(@InfraRen from Minnesota )
Alex Meyer is ranked #12 on the list, so neither Berrios or Stewart hopped him. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Alex Meyer at 12? Does this mean your team thinks he has an elite ceiling, or ready for the bigs, or both? He still seems to have a little issue with the walks, but the Ks keep coming. Do you have a report on his changeup development?
(flashtheleather from In the 6 hole)
Elite is a strong word, but I think he offers impact potential in his ceiling (#2 starter) and his floor (frontline closer). That's a nice profile to bring to the table and helps balance the risk/reward. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Nolasco's injury and Yohan Pino's 15 minutes almost up, do you see Trevor May and Alex Meyer making their debuts soon? What can we expect from them?
(Jim from Kansas)
I think both will be up in Minnesota in the second half of the season. I've always been much higher on Meyer than I have May. To me, Meyer has always been a starter and a quality 2/3 starter at that. I've never been that enamored with May's long term outlook, and never saw the high-end arm that some did. To me, he's more of a #4 starter; still valuable but not nearly as impressive as some would lead you to believe. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do you imagine Alex Meyer will be called upon?
(Ace from PA)
I think he could get the call at any point, even if only for a look, but he should at least be up in September. (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)How long is my cup of coffee before Alex Meyer and/or Trevor May take my spot and Correia's? What can we expect from Meyer and May when called upon?
(Yohan Pino from In rotation)
Rent, don't buy. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's your outlook on Trevor May and Alex Meyer for this season? Who gets the call first and how do each of them do in MLB?
(Jurgen Klinsmann from Brazil)
I'm not huge on Trevor May, but he's certainly become more interesting. I'm all about Alex Meyer, though. I think he's a potential #2 starter if he can sustain his improved command. I acquired him a couple months ago in my 20-team dynasty league and am looking forward to reaping the benefits as soon as 2015. I think he's legit. On the flip side, I'm not convinced Trevor May is anything more than a back-end option. (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Alex Meyer. Do you think some of his success is due to a new change-up, and if so couldn't he be a monster?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
He could be a monster. Deep arsenal; unteachable size; impact offerings. Yes please, regardless of his future role. (Jason Parks)
2014-05-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Alex Meyer is crediting a new changeup grip that he's added since Opening Day with the recent improvement in his fortunes. (In his last two starts he's got 22K in 12.1 IP and he's throwing the change quite a bit.) How often is a simple alteration that effective this suddenly?
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
Major changes to stuff can make a huge difference in short order, especially when it comes to off-speed stuff. Meyer has an 8 fastball, a plus slider, and unfair biological advantages - tack on a change-up that batters struggle to identify from his deep release point and you have the recipe for a high-impact pitcher.

Elite pitchers do this at the big-league level, as well, especially to compensate for deteriorating velocity.

Roger Clemens went from a FB-CB guy in his 20's to a FB-Split guy in his late 30's and 40's, King Felix has developed the CH to be his most lethal weapon, etc. For Meyer, the change greatly elevates his already vaulted ceiling as a prospect.

On the jukebox: Van Halen, "You Really Got Me" (Doug Thorburn)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do we see Alex Meyer in Minnesota? Do you like him as a starter or reliever?
(Not Slim Shady from Detroit)
I would expect to see Meyer in Minnesota in the second half. I still like him as a starter. He does a surprising job of controlling his long limbs and his strike throwing has improved dramatically since college. I'd like to see them give him a chance to start, even if he's a tad inconsistent and settles in the middle of a rotation, instead of the front. (Mark Anderson)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Completely ignoring 2014 and assuming all three are starting pitchers, how would you rank these three for dynasty: Matt Moore, Carlos Martinez, Alex Meyer?
(doog7642 from Blaine, MN)
You just ranked 'em! :) (Paul Sporer)
2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some minor league arms with fastballs too good to ignore...like Robert Stephenson?
(Chris from Baltimore)
Jonathan Gray, Yordano Ventura, Lucas Giolito, Noah Syndergaard, Alex Meyer ... I am big on Kyle Zimmer's fastball, which only loses deception when he ratchets down the momentum in his delivery, resulting in lesser depth at release point and poor command. It's an 8 when he lines up the gears. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be the future ace arms of the twins organization?
(Beaux from La)
It depends on which definition of ace you're using. If we're employing the scouting definition (i.e. one of the best dozen or so starters in baseball) then Kohl Stewart has the most realistic chance of reaching that upside. If we're just talking Guy Who Starts on Opening Day then Alex Meyer (a probable no. 2 or 3 on the scouting scale) is a good bet in the short term. Terry Ryan upgraded his rotation this winter, but it's still mostly no. 4 types.

Lewis Thorpe also deserves a mention, though he was born in 1995 and that makes me uncomfortable. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Keeper league draft where I need OF/P since I already have 2 MiLB top 10 infielders. Guys available in the range I'll draft: Marcus Stroman, Andrew Heaney, Alex Meyer, Clint Frazier, Joc Pedersen. Anyone jump out at you?
(RWarriors13 from Illinois)
My man-crush on Marcus Stroman has been pretty well documented. I'm driving the Stroman-as-a-Starter bus. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that any of these players will make the major league team out of spring training: Miguel Sano,Arismendy Alcantara, Franicsco Lindor, Alex Meyer, Noah Syndergaard
(temple from madison)
I wouldn't be surprised if Sano got a decent amount of playing time with the Twins this season but I wouldn't expect he'd make the team out of ST for, if nothing else, service time reasons. The Cubs already have Castro at short so there's no reason to bring up Alcantara, same with Lindor and the Indians. I'd be surprised if any of them made the majors out of ST, but crazier things have happened for sure. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)If you pick one between Alex Meyer and Aaron Sanchez, who is your pick?
(gotwins0912 from Taichung city)
Meyer. Higher floor; comparable ceiling in a rotation. Sanchez has big upside, but I've never been all the way in with him. Something about the approach really bothers me. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect could be #tesh?
(Marco from Malawi)
Alex Meyer. Deep arsenal with impressive length. (Jason Parks)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jeff - A lot of pitching prospects have been throw around in this chat. Curious where Kyle Zimmer ranks; thinking in terms of tiers, who is his peer set - the guys you would cluster around him? What is his ceiling like down the road?
(aaronayoung from Washington, DC)
He's in the Jameson Taillon, Andrew Heaney, Aaron Sanchez, Alex Meyer class. It's a good spot to be in. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Alex Meyer? Concerned about the shoulder issue? Can he be a legit #1 or #2 SP?
(sjdigio from Chicago)
The shoulder requires some hesitation, but I had good reports at the end of the season and there appears to be some confidence in his health heading into 2014. I really like him but I don't see a #1 or #2 starter; more of a #3 with tantalizing raw stuff. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of ceiling does Alex Meyer have?
(richardkr34 from Saint Paul, MN)
He's either a #3 starter or closer for me. There are always going to be issues with body control and that will lead to command/control issues at times, but the stuff is impressive enough that he could still work as an enigmatic #3 starter. If all else fails, he would be a terrifying presence at the end of games. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Alex Meyer will find enough mechanical consistency to be a starter? On the jukebox: Year of the Cat by Al Stewart
(richardkr34 from Saint Paul)
Meyer has a starter's repertoire and the type of frame that tends to give guys multiple chances, but you are right on that consistency will be the key to his fitting at the beginning of games rather than the end of them. He has some work to do, but that's why the prospecting game is so much fun - the essence of player development is on that second word. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Would you consider the pitching depth in the Twins' system lacking?
(richardkr34 from Saint Paul, MN)
I would consider the Twins' pitching improving. Alex Meyer, JO Berrios, Trevor May, and others are all very good options. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alex Meyer's ceiling?
(Rob from ND)
My honest opinion is that he ends up as a very good late-inning arm, possibly a closer. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alex Meyer end up in the rotation or the pen?
(Klochner from MN)
I'll guess the bullpen, but he does have a chance to start. He's not a 'pen or bust type. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather have Alex Meyer or Vance Worley and Trevor May?
(Klochner from MN)
I'd rather have Meyer than May (Jason Parks)
