2011 This is the end of the road for Kris Benson, who might finally be healthy but has nothing left to offer. He will go down as one of the great disappointments in prospect history, and forever serve as a glaring example of the unbearable lightness of pitching prospects.
2010 After not pitching in the big leagues for two years, Kris Benson made eight godawful appearances for the Rangers, and spent the winter looking for another spring training invite.
2008 The Orioles chose not to exercise their 2008 option on Kris Benson after he missed all of 2007 due to rotator cuff surgery, thus closing the book on the John Maine trade. There's no telling how effective Benson will be in his comeback until he actually pitches.
2007 One of MLB.com`s reporters described Kris Benson as an average major league pitcher signed for an average salary through 2007. What that reporter didn`t realize was that paying average players average salaries is typical of a losing team. Good teams pay big bucks for big performers, but make up for it by going cheap on the average guys, which they get via their minor league system or canny scouting. The Orioles traded John Maine, a young major league pitcher at a stage in his career when he was still likely to improve, and still-serviceable reliever Jorge Julio to get Benson, an average major league pitcher with a long injury history at an age at which he was most likely to experience a decline, and dramatically increased their payroll in the process. It was dumb then, and it still is a year later.
2006 Maybe the Mets didn`t overpay for him. Maybe this is what $7 million-plus looks like nowadays: a league-average ERA and one strikeout for every eight guys you face. Certainly, in his eagerness for the pleasure of Benson`s company in 2005, Omar Minaya boosted the earnings power of every good pitcher in baseball. A year later, Minaya was just as eager to shop him around, finally placing Benson on the Orioles for reliever Jorge Julio and control artist John `Remember the` Maine, and better still, getting Baltimore to take on all of Benson`s salary. Never send to know for whom the bell tolls, Omar; it tolls for thee. As for the ex-Met, Benson will have the benefit of working with Leo Mazzone, so who knows, maybe everyone wins.
2005 Benson is one of the ten most overrated players in baseball, largely based on his status as the #1 overall pick in 1996. Last year was his first as a league-average pitcher since 2000, and the season was just that—average. His peripherals are just okay, and the idea that he's a high-upside guy is wrong. He's 30, for crying out loud. The three-year, $22-million contract he signed in November kicked off the silly season for pitchers, and like so many other free agents this winter, Benson is likely going to be a disappointment for the life of the deal.
2003 Benson underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on May 22, 2001. Less than a year later, the hardworking righty was back with the Pirates. His first four starts were nothing to write home about, but from June through the end of the season, Benson was 9–3 with a 3.92 ERA. Both his two-seam and four-seam fastballs have good movement and velocity, and he has a plus slider. If Benson fully regains command of his knee-buckling curve and stays healthy, he can be the Bucs’ rotation anchor.
2002 One of four Tommy John surgery patients in the Pirates’ organization this year, Benson signed a four-year contract just in time to miss the first year and a half or so. Considered a Cy Young Award candidate before the injury, Benson probably won’t return to that form until mid-2003 or so, which should give the Pirates enough time to realize that they should have shut him down entirely when he first came up lame in August of 2000.
2001 He took a 3.05 ERA and a 104-to-44 strikeout-to-walk ratio into the All-Star break, then slowly but consistently declined. The Pirates continued to work him hard as he struggled; fortunately, a fluke injury kept him out of several September starts, perhaps saving his arm for the time being. Kris Benson is a future Cy Young contender whom the Bucs should handle a lot more carefully.
2000 He showed up at spring training with the command he lacked in 1998, made the team and became its second-best starter despite some wild stretches. Benson adjusted frequently during the season, improving his control dramatically after a rough stretch in mid-May when he lost the strike zone. Everything is back on track for him to assume the #1 role by the end of 2000.
1999 The Pirates are happy with Benson's season, pointing out that he stayed healthy, held his own in Triple-A in just his second season, etc. However, his mechanics aren't completely ironed out, and Triple-A has been a cemetery for Pirate pitchers lately. He has three major-league pitches, but didn't have command of them in at least a half-dozen starts this year. Will return to Triple-A for at least another half-season.
1998 Started out 1997 by whacking the Carolina League, but hitters turned the tables when he went to Double-A. He was hampered by a sore hamstring in August, and that combined with his struggles at Calgary has pushed back plans to put him in the April rotation. Benson was named the best pitching prospect in the Carolina League and won “best breaking pitch” honors in the circuit. The 1996 #1 overall pick has already done more than Brien Taylor, and he didn’t even cost much more.
