BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Every year, prospect hounds and fantasy mavens pick up this very Annual to look for their white whale: sleeper picks that will, come late September, make the general populace shiver with envy at their scouting acumen. Of course, now that nearly every Low-A ballclub has scout types writing up reports on them, it's become nearly impossible to find the truly unknowns. It's like looking for a clean-shaven dude in Brooklyn. But be happy, deep-divers:

Clevinger could be your guy.

A former top-10 prospect with the Angels, his development stalled during every hurler's requisite first Tommy John surgery. But 2015 was a revelation—he posted 158 strong innings at Akron and tallied nearly a strikeout per inning. His strengths: a four-pitch arsenal and legit mid-90s heat, not the sort of pyrite mid-90s heat that faux scouts hype because they saw 94 on a nearby gun once. The red flags: delivery (awkward) and durability (untested). Nevertheless, the return for Vinnie Pestano looks like a steal so far. This is the latest in a stretch of savvy trades for starting pitching talent made by Chris Antonetti and staff. Maybe next time you should just ask the Cleveland front office for starting pitcher sleeper picks.

Back-end starter or middle reliever. Good depth to have around, for sure. (Aaron Gleeman)
