2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Forrest wall has a little mookie in him too doesn't he? At least offensively...
(myonkosk from Virginia beach, VA)
Interesting angle. As I said, I saw a good amount of Mookie's pro debut (basically, had one game with GCL club year before). Guess what? NO ONE thought he was this kind of player. I think he probably got turned in most as a utility guy. He looked awkward and uncomfortable at SS. Didn't have the range and his reads/jumps and instincts were off. His athleticism played down. Everything played down. They finally signed Deven Marrero and he moved Mookie over to 2B. From there on out Mookie got better and better. By the end of the summer he was raking and even hit a few bombs in batting practice. I STILL didn't see the real Mookie and was skeptical when people started raving about him the next year. Since Deven Marrero showed up at Lowell the guy has just been on a rocket trajectory upward. Keeps getting better and better and all his natural ability comes out to shine.

Wall now is basically ahead of where Mookie was then. Doesn't mean a whole lot since Mookie's development path is... rare. I tried to see Wall down in FL last March but he was hurt. Seen enough to think that guy is going to hit plenty, though. (Al Skorupa)
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Ben, what do you make of the Mets SS situation? Obviously they've been connected to every SS that has even remotely become available, but is there any chance Flores can become the answer or will he always just be a stopgap?
(Grizzly from Chicago)
I like Flores' hit tool and think he can pass as a first-division 2B. He's not going to be a good defensive SS ever, though, so as long as he plays there you're going to hear rumors about the Mets finding a replacement. I don't think Desmond or Tulo are happening, but I do wonder if they can't make a deal work with Texas for Andrus or Profar. If not, they should totally give Zack Wheeler to the Red Sox for Deven Marrero, imo. (Ben Carsley)
2014-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Deven Marrero's defense has received quite a few very positive comments recently. Bogaerts looks like he can't cut it defensively but Marrero could barely hit his weight in Triple-A. In your opinion, does Marrero have a chance to hit enough to be a regular?
(oldbopper from New Britain, CT)
Marrero can pick it. Love the glove. He just can't hit. Just watched his BP and the bat is light. Average tools for me offensively. Looks like a role 4 guy right now. (Tucker Blair)
2014-08-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who makes up the Red Sox infield in 2015?
(Jim from Boston)
Pedroia! So that's one. I have a hard time imaging they'll move Napoli, so he'll probably be at first. Bogaerts will be at short or third. I'm guessing third, but that's one of the things the Red Sox hope to learn over the next two months. At short then, Deven Marrero? Things are easier if Bogaerts stays at short both because third is an easier position to fill and because the team has Will Middlebrooks, Brock Holt, Garin Cecchini, and probably someone I'm forgetting. (Matthew Kory)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Did Red Sox farmhands having huge years Deven Marrero, Sean Coyle, or Brian Johnson get consideration for the top 50?
(Nick from MA)
They didn't. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Is expecting Deven Marrero to open the 2015 season as Boston's starting shortstop unrealistic? In that case, do you see Bogaerts at short to start the year, or do they bring in a placeholder for Marrero?
(Evan from Worcester, MA)
I'm not sold that he will hit enough to be a major league regular. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you ever seen Deven Marrero this season? If yes, can you talk your thoughts on him? Is he just a defense-only shortshop?
(Chris King from St. Petersburg)
I have and wasn't crazy about the bat at all. Good approach, but lacking punch and I questioned the mechanics. I'd put a plus on the glove and he's a relatively instinctual player overall, but the bat is very likely going to keep him from being an ideal every day guy. Maybe more of a utility or up-and-down type. (Jason Cole)
2012-11-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does the future (statistically) hold for Wilin Rosario, and what position/ceiling do you anticipate for Xander Bogaerts in Beantown? Thanks.
(Chopper from Indy)
Good questions, Chopper. From an offensive standpoint, I'd expect to see more of the same from Rosario — that is, lots of home runs and not very many walks — though a modest improvement in plate discipline is probably attainable with more experience. He led all catchers in homers (admittedly, with help from Coors Field) and was a 1.9-win player in 117 games, so I'd be more concerned about Rosario's defense. He looked very rough around the edges on the few occasions I watched him, and allowed a league-high 21 passed balls. A 3.0-3.5 WARP-per-year future seems possible, if he can improve in those areas.

Regarding Bogaerts, that's probably a better question for Jason Parks and the minor-league team, but I'd assume the Red Sox will give him every chance to stay at shortstop — at least until Deven Marrero is ready. I think he has a chance to be a perennial All-Star. (Daniel Rathman)
