BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Severino Gonzalez seems like just a lanky, soft-tossing righty with up-and-down potential on his best days, but he also saw a massive uptick in his strikeout rate in the majors—of all places—while also seeing just about anything in the zone smacked around the field.
2015 Gonzalez's first year stateside turned some heads, but he came back to earth just as quickly as 23 of his pitches left it. He is more command-and-control than pure stuff, but his fastball was playing up in the mid-90s out of the bullpen in 2013. That might be his eventual landing spot, as a pitcher who can spot a fastball at that enhanced velocity will almost always find a late-inning, high-leverage role. But there's still room to hope for more, considering he survived Double-A despite being four years younger than the average Eastern League pitcher. Let this be the 150th time you'll read this about a young pitcher mentioned in this book: He'll need to keep developing his changeup to make it as a starter.
2014 For every $500,000 international signee who does nothing, there's a $14,000 Severino Gonzalez who adds five ticks to his fastball, dominates in his stateside debut and earns himself a big dot on the prospect map.

2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any advice on how to successfully tank in dynasty without pissing anyone off? I think I've got the second part down, considering once I decided to rebuild four weeks ago I've gone undefeated thanks to streaming Alex Colome, Despaigne, Severino Gonzalez, Kelly, and others with the expectation that they would suck and have them end up doing great.
(Patrick from NJ)
I am terrible at tanking without pissing people off. In terms of your stream options I'd have to see the opponents but Colome and Despaigne aren't terrible stream options for winning so maybe, stream worse? (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Severino, have you seen or heard anything regarding Phillies' pitcher Severino Gonzalez? He's at Clearwater.
(smitty99 from Federal Way WA)
I saw him oppose Tyler Glasnow, Severino Gonzalez is an interesting type pitcher with a very small frame. The cutter he throws is intriguing, but overall it was more solid minor league pitcher than major prospect. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Tocci from you brief stop in Lakewood? Also how does Severino Gonzalez look?
(Matt from Madison)
I liked Tocci. Physically underdeveloped and the lack of strength limits him at the plate. But I saw an approach to hitting, and a good swing. Loved the way he looked in CF; moved well and showed a strong arm. Just playing at the full-season level at his age is a monster accomplishment and speaks to his makeup. I was impressed. (Jason Parks)
