BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 On June 17th, Shaun Marcum had an absolute disaster of a start (two-plus innings, six earned runs) and inadvertently jump-started Cody Anderson's big-league career. Forced into duty as Cleveland's new no. 5, Anderson promptly navigated lineups the way the Millenium Falcon dodged asteroids, never more than one step away from disaster but never closer, either. Big Country has the stuff of a swingman, with a pedestrian fastball and good-but-not-elite control, so it would be a mistake to expect him to replicate the runaway success of his 2015 season—especially the 1.38 ERA in September that won him the AL Pitcher of the Month honors. (Despite a 3.85 FIP, harumph.) Predictive metrics like cFIP see the big righty as a fringy starter going forward, but he'll always have 2015.
2015 Repeating Double-A did broad righty Cody Anderson no favors as he got hit around again in 2014. He has a four-pitch mix but none of them miss bats.
2014 With a sturdy frame and a four-pitch mix, Anderson has long had the toolset to start, but he was hidden as a closer at Feather River College until the Indians plucked him in the 14th round of the 2011 draft. The right-hander boasts a plus slider and a mid-90s fastball—the tandem he employed most often out of the bullpen—but he also spins a curveball and commands a changeup, which complement his best offerings and give him an adequate recipe to retire lefties. Anderson’s arm has relatively low mileage because of his history in relief, though the downside is that he may need extra time to adjust to higher-level hitters. Once the command comes together, Anderson could settle in as a middle-of-the-rotation starter.

2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)In a 13 team AL only league, is Cody Anderson a keeper at $5
(Jason from Rockaway NJ)
Yeah, but it's on the bubble. (Mike Gianella)
2016-02-03 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Cody Anderson a viable fantasy option for 2016?
(Eddie from Ohio)
Can't see it. Don't think he has a spot in the rotation and even if he did, he can't strike out anyone and last year's ERA is a mirage. (Greg Wellemeyer)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)AL Only league, $260 cap. Is Cody Anderson of Cleveland protectable at $5?
(Jason from Rockaway)
In an AL-only? Sure. (George Bissell)
2016-01-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)How about ranking MLB-debuting starting pitchers Jorge Lopez, Tyler Duffey, Cody Anderson, Zach Davies, John Lamb, Colin Rea, Mike Montgomery and Jerad Eickhoff for long-term value in a dynasty sim league, if you please? Are there big tiers or divisions there? Thanks for all your time spent on scouting and chats.
