2005 Roa has been popping in and out of the big leagues since 1995, and if he never could really dent bread with his best stuff, he's a useful journeyman. He got a bit huffy after being left off the postseason roster, going home when he could have traveled with the team and remained eligible for the second round if the Twins made it. A NRI with the Bucs, Roa is as much a long shot as ever, and strictly roster filler.
2003 Roa is a perfect example of how a team can cheaply fill out its pitching staff. A minor league free agent who put up gaudy numbers in the International League, he got a chance in the majors and did a solid job for two months. He’s not likely to continue that success after getting tonked his second time through the league. Not that it’s likely to happen, if a team offered the Phillies a legitimate player for Roa, they should trade him immediately.
1999 Roa has excellent control, but nothing else about his game stands out. He's had chances with two major-league teams already. If he was a lefty, he'd get chances with at least two more. He's a righty, and probably the envy of Kennie Steenstra and Brady Raggio for getting even two chances.
1998 Some folks will justify the Matt Williams trade by noting this “sleeper.” Roa looked like a throw-in next to the more illustrious Kent, Vizcaino and Tavarez, but is said to have a great future. Guys who strike out fewer than five men per nine innings when they’re 25 don’t usually have a great future.
1997 An extreme finesse pitcher, Roa has nothing left to prove in the minors. He’d be a fine addition to a number of major league rotations, and he’s got a durable arm.
1996  He doesn't have great stuff, but he certainly does have a knack for winning, going 61-29 over these five years, including a spectacular 17-3 with Buffalo this year. Excellent control, uses off-speed pitches for outs.
