YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 There are long shots and then there is Gattis. He gave up the game as an amateur only to return and play at a Division III school. The Braves drafted Gattis just before he turned 24, and they tried to make up for lost time by pushing him through the system and, last year, moving him from catcher to the outfield. Gattis has a large frame, plus-plus raw power, and a surprising knack for contact. All hes done since turning pro is hit, hit, and hit some more. If that continues, he could see the majors by the end of the season.

2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)Clint Coulter looks pretty good, and could be the person to take over after Lucroy in Milwaukee. What are your thoughts on Coulter as a hitter and defensively (game calling and such)?
(Cole from Wisconsin)
It's really far away. Lucroy is going to be the catcher there for the forseeable future. He's one of the best in the game.

As far as Coulter goes, the bat is real. Potential 50 hit 55/60 power guy. As far as his defense goes... he's got plus power potential! It's not Schwarber rough behind the dish, but it's Evan Gattis quality. He's going to have to really work at it in order to be a big league catcher, even in a platoon role. Regardless, the bat is legit, and frankly, that's going to be his carrying tool to the majors. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Christian Bethancourt taking the full time gig from Evan Gattis at anytime during this year?
(Derron from ATL)
Could depend on the rest of the Braves offense. If BJ gets it in gear and is a productive hitter, Uggla bounces back, etc. then the Braves will be able to go defense first behind the plate. If not, they'll need Gattis' pop. My guess is that injuries create plenty of at-bats for Gattis in other spots than just as the C. (Jeff Moore)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Ryan Howard for Evan Gattis and Adam Eaton?
(CharlieHodge from MetsNation)
That's tough because Gattis could be squeezed once McCann is 100% back and Heyward returns. Eaton hasn't had AB one yet. I would pass. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do fantasy owners who don't have room for another catcher do with Evan Gattis? Love the pop he provides but if he's only playing 2-3 games a week is it worth keeping him on the roster?
(Mark from Ky.)
Really depends on league format, but probably not in most mixed league formats. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)So, I picked up Evan Gattis on the wire, and now an impatient owner dumped Sal Perez. Going forward in a points league where pretty much everything counts, I want Perez, yes? Especially with McCann on his way back soon?
(Yatchisin from a rock and a hard place)
I would lean toward Perez, if only because his playing time feels more secure. I think the Braves will be creative in getting Gattis into the lineup but 1) I don't think he's going to play everyday and 2) I don't know that he'll continue to hit this well. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Does Evan Gattis hold much value once McCann gets back?
(nubber from tx)
Probably not - once McCann and Freeman are healthy, he probably gets 2 starts a week plus one at bat a night as the first guy off the bench. Leaves him in fantasy purgatory. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)With McCann's free agency fast approaching what impact could Evan Gattis have in 2014?
(morrsco from Atlanta)
Let's all slow our roll with Evan Gattis. He may just be Chris Shelton with below average defense behind the plate. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that Evan Gattis can actually stick as a major leaguer? Is he a real catcher, or just a rogue bat?
(Nick from Hotlanta)
I'm not sure. I want hi to stick around because he's from Texas and the narrative has a lot of #want, but I'm just not sure. I haven't seen enough, to be honest. (Jason Parks)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Evan Gattis worth a flyer in an 11-team NL only 5x5 league? Need to pick up a catcher and only others available are Hundley, McKenry, Laird, Navarro and Maldanado.
(JP from LA)
If those are your options, absolutely. Gattis could put up nice numbers for an NL-only endgame catcher in April before McCann comes back. (Bret Sayre)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)As a life long Braves fan, I have a questions about a couple of prospects. Evan Gattis and Edward Salcedo. What does the timetable on each look like? Do you think either will develop into an impact player at the major league level?
(Quincy from The A)
Gattis needs to be healthy to make an impact, something that's been quite tough for him. He's not a catcher at the big league level and he has to hit at the top of his abilities to stand up on an outfield corner. I think he ends up as more of a solid player than one that makes a major impact.

With Salcedo, the tools have always been present, but the approach in the batter's box still lags behind. I think some of the issues he faced around the time he signed, keeping him off the field for a while, really set him back a bit. He's still only 21-years old and he has everything needed to be an impact player. He carries a lot of risk, but he has the makeup and work ethic to pull it off. (Mark Anderson)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Evan Gattis worth a late-round flier in a silly deep scoresheet league?
(ChoppertoChipper from Edmonton)
Sure, they could feasibly bring him up this year given his advanced age relative to his level. Keep in mind that the same age that could get him a call is also a factor in his nice stats that we've seen. He could probably be your last pick, though I'm brand new to scoresheet and have yet to complete my first draft (we're midway through). (Paul Sporer)
2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is it even worth speculating about Evan Gattis's future? Or is he just too unique?
(Dees from Jersey)
I think he could be in Atlanta by September. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-04-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any early thoughts on how Bethancourt is adapting to his new level? Is there a reason to get excited about Evan Gattis?
(ChoppertoChipper from Edmonton)
There is a reason to be very patient, regardless of the result. The raw defensive tools will make him a major leaguer. The development of the bat is what could not only keep him at the level, but make him a special player. The bat is going to take some time to develop. (Jason Parks)
