2014-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dilson Herrera or Alen Hanson?
(Stephen from Baltimore)
Herrera; I like the probability slightly more. (NL Central Top 10s With Nick Faleris)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these prospects in a dynasty: Rosell Herrera, Nick Williams, Blake Swihart, Daniel Norris, Trevor Story, Alen Hanson, Philip Ervin, Kennys Vargas, Steven Mats.
(Tim from NJ)
Nick Williams, Trevor Story, Daniel Norris and Blake Swihart are the big four of that group. I think everyone kinda rounds out the backend. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Alen Hanson will make the top 101 prospects? Since May 1st he's hit 297/333/493 with 10 HRs and 12 SBs. I know you arent supposed to scout the stat line, but if he was even a passable SS do you think he would have made the #BPtop50?
(Joe Random from San Jose)
If he was going to stay at SS, then hed have been in the discussion for the 50, most likely, but probably outside of it. Hes going to move to second base most likely, so its not like its a huge drop off, though there are guys who prefer a player with a left-side profile better. I like guys who can stay up the middle (were talking the difference between second and third basemen, here). He is bouncing back this year, however, so he may be in the Top 101 discussion at the end of the year. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeff, what's your take on Alen Hanson's progress? He seems to have struggled some at AA, but has the scouting report changed at all? Also, one observation, his production has been remarkably better from the #2 slot than hitting leadoff this year. I assume this is just noise, but it is interesting. Thanks.
(Noel from Calgary)
I wouldn't put much stock in production in small samples in different spots in the order, but it is interesting. He still has a bit of a twiner profile, because if he doesn't hit .300, he doesn't get on base enough for me and I'm not sold he can stick at short. Still looks like a nice utility guy though. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mookie Betts or Alen Hanson?
(Ned Flanders from Springfield)
Mookie (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Overall thoughts regarding Alen Hanson? Probability of putting up 15/30 seasons in a few years? I adore him and think he's going to be a breakout player this year, and want to hear your thoughts!
(vegetto712 from Florida)
I don't see 15 home runs in his future, but that doesn't mean he's not going to be a nice player. I think he's a second baseman at the end of the day, but one that can be above-average offensively and defensively at the position. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)SS Prospect Watch: Addison Russell vs. Alen Hanson. Who has a bigger upside and who is less of a risk?
(fishersehorn31 from VA - The 540)
Russell and Russell. I like Hanson ok, but they're not in the same class. Also, there's a decent chance Hanson isn't a SS long-term. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alen Hanson or Eddie Rosario?
(Fred from Minnesota)
Rosario (not super high on either, so its close) (Jason Parks)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Alen Hanson not getting enough love for holding his own in Double A as a 21 year old? Certainly wasn't an outstanding performance, but still solid right?
(Dale from Pitt)
I think he's getting appropriate love. He's a good prospect, but not a great prospect. He can swing it, but its not a big impact profile. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Alen Hanson? Does he get a shot a 2B 2014, and if so do you see him being an everyday guy?
(higgsboson from guelph)
Don't think he sniffs the majors in 2014, but I do see him as an everyday guy--even if it's more of a second-division profile. (Bret Sayre)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Professor Parks, what are your thoughts of Alen Hanson & Kaleb Cowart going into 2014? Are there concerns that the they both can't handle higher level pitching? Is them being a role 6 type player more unlikely now then was heading into 2013?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Definite concerns, especially with Cowart. HIs swing was a mess in 2013, with balance issues and bat speed that didn't look like major league quality. I don't see either as a role 6 talent at this point, but the raw talent is still there for developmental progress and a major league future. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I be worried about Alen Hanson struggling in AA? Does the bat still play?
(Dave from Pittsburgh from Pittsburgh)
No, not really. Very short sample when you're talking only 35 games. And at a premium defensive position and at age 20, I wouldn't worry about it at all. It's not like he's striking out a lot. If we're having this conversation a year from now, maybe, but if he gets a full year at this level, I'd expect performance to rise and he'll still be 21. (Zachary Levine)
2013-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do you think we see Alen Hanson in the bigs? Does he stick at SS?
(Sagar from my cubicle)
2015. Yes. (Zachary Levine)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alen Hanson had a breakout year last year and is holding his own in high-A as a 20-year-old kid. Could he be a legitimate starting shortstop at the MLB level and just how high is his ceiling? Thanks!
(Brett from Pennsylvania)
I like the bat; don't love the overall profile at SS. I think he can make it work, but would be a better fit at 2B, where the bat will play. I think quality defense at 2B gets overlooked because of the prestige associated with the double-play mate on the left-side. 2B is still an up-the-middle position, and the physical demands are legit. Even if Hanson becomes a 2B, it shouldn't knock him as much as some people like to believe. It's a difficult position to play at a high level, and when you factor in the stick, Hanson could be a very valuable major league player. (Jason Parks)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Im in a 20 team dynasty league with a 5 man prospect roster. Staring me in the face on the waiver wire are Puello, Berrios, Stratton, and Eddie Butler. Would you add any of these guys over current guys on my roster Wilmer Flores, Chris Owings, Alen Hanson?
(Alec from Scottsdale, Az)
I really like Butler and Berrios, but I dont know anything about fantasy baseball so I'm not much help. If you want any advice about my fantasies for Tom Verducci, please re-submit. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Bret, I play in a fairly deep competitive keeper league 16 team with a 20 man minor system. I am always looking for the edge in future top prospects as they carry quite the value in mid season trades etc. In 2011 I was able to grab a pre breakout Taveras and Bogaerts, since that year I am always looking for prospects who look to really make that jump from back end or outside the top 100 to future top 30 stud. I was wondering if you had some names to watch in A and Low A, that could make these leaps, particularly position players. Alen Hanson and Polanco are already picked up, Adalberto Mondesi is spoken for as well, trying to stay ahead of my competition.
(Brandon from Toronto)
If you want a few off the radar names, how about Zach Eflin and Dilson Herrera. And if you don't need to dig quite that deep, check out Dorssys Paulino, Blake Snell, Jeimer Candelario and Joe Ross. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Better prospect Trevor Story or Alen Hanson?
(Garcia from The Hills)
Read this as "Better prospect story, Trevor Story or Alen Hanson." Was trying to figure out how to assess the value of each player's story. Finally got it.

Trevor Story is not as good at baseball as Alen Hanson, in my reading-other-people's-opinions opinion. (Sam Miller)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank David Dahl, Gregory Polanco, and Alen Hanson in a dynasty league that uses OBP, SLG, HR, RBI, SB+Runs, and a negative category for Total Errors Committed?
(Halo Fan from SoCal)
Hanson, Polanco, Dahl. Dahl has lots of potential, but need to see him hit in full season ball before I get more excited. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)So you wouldn't be concerned about Alen Hanson's 40 errors last season in a league with errors as a negative category?
(Halo Fan from SoCal)
Not at all. It's Low-A and he likely won't have to worry about playing SS in the majors. (Bret Sayre)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mr.Levine,can you put thes guys in order??Jose Fernandez...Salvador Perez...Albert Almora..Jorge Solar...Kyle Zimmer...Noah Syndergaaud...Allen Webster...Alen Hanson...Gregory Palanco..Aaron Sanchez...Andrew Heaney...Kevin Gausman..Addison Russell....Kyle Crick...Sean Manaea...Clint Frazier...Ryne Stanek... Thanks John
(John from Boston)
I sort of feel like this is a riddle to see if I can figure out what this list even is. What is this list? I'll go with Salvador (Sal(vy)) Perez and then the rest just for the present. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey R.J.,can you put these guys in order,Jose Fernandez,Almora,Solar,Zimmer,Syndergaurd,Hedges,Allen Webster,Aaron Sanchez,Alen Hanson,Sean Manrea,Clint Frazier and Kevin Gausman...thanks for all the hard work!!!
(John from Boston)
John, I don't think I know enough about these players to give you a useful answer. I will say that I like Webster and Hanson quite a bit. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Manly, yes. But I like it, too! Is Alen Hanson maybe a .280/.350/.470 shortstop long term? More bat... but at second base? Thanks!
(Mrs. Kove from Teeveeland)
I don't think he sticks at SS, but it depends on his focus and dedication to the position. The bat will play at 2B. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your feelings about Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson? Who has the better chance of reaching his respective ceiling? Also, do you see any other prospects making a jump like that in the Pirates system this coming year?
(Will from Rochester)
Both are legit prospects, although I'm not sold on Hanson at SS. Polanco, on the other hand, I can buy in CF. I'm not sure if I'd rank either player above Josh Bell, who I feel has the highest offensive ceiling of the three. Very close. All three are top ten guys in that system. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Any prospects that have really moved up the rankings this year that you are excited about?
(Jerome from Holding pattern)
No problem. Thanks for reading. Yes; lots of prospects have jumped up the rankings. Guys like Alen Hanson, Nick Castellanos, Zach Wheeler, and Jose Fernandez have taken big steps forward. They are climbing the prospect tiers... (Jason Parks)
