2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)In five years, who is the best player: Willy Adames, Derek Hill, Jake Thompson, Robbie Ray, Nick Castellanos?
(Tigersfan from MI)
Hill has the highest ceiling, but I'll go Castellanos. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-07-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for everything and best wishes for continued success!! What do you think about the performance of Nick Castellanos so far this season??
(Donnie from Detroit)
Thus far, PECOTA's projection seems smart. He's looked somewhat better as the season's gone on and should be fine in the future, but in the short term, some left-handed help at the hot corner wouldn't hurt--which is something that one could also say about the Braves and Royals. Eric Chavez got hurt at the wrong time. Then again, that's usually the case with Eric Chavez. (Ben Lindbergh)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat!! What's your evaluation of Nick Castellanos at this point in the season??
(DJ from Detroit)
Castellanos has been just about what I expected at this point. The defense at third base has been hit or miss and generally below-average in my opinion. The offense has had swoons, but he has demonstrated an ability to make adjustments and develop as a hitter. The power is still evolving, and will continue to evolve as his approach matures. I still think he's a borderline All-Star caliber player at his peek and nothing that's happened this season has caused me to shift off that opinion. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the potential upside fir Nick Castellanos ?
(Dan from Detroit)
What he's doing is almost exactly what I expected. If he's not hitting .300, he's below average because he doesn't have plus power and doesn't walk enough. I think he'll hit for more power down the road and he'll be better than a .260 hitter, but for now, he's making a ton of outs. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Handful of questions for you... How was the BP Event in DC as a whole? Do you have a favorite part or story from the weekend? Also, what are your thoughts on Nick Castellanos season thus far and what do you see as his future slash line? Finally, do you have a sleeper or two currently in the Detroit system? Thanks-
(NatsGM from Washington DC)
I loved the event. It was truly excellent. I got to meet some outstanding people, including some members of the BP staff that I hadn't yet met in person. It was a great time, and I really appreciate you sponsoring the after party!

Castellanos' season, while unimpressive on paper, has made me more confident that he's going to be a damn good hitter. At the beginning of the year, he was swinging at everything, and only going to RCF with authority, as is his comfort zone. Then, pitchers adjusted, stopped throwing him strikes that he could handle, and he struggled. Since, he's readjusted, and started hitting the ball with authority to left and LCF. It's a game of adjustments, and Nick's showing that he can make them. I can see some .295/.350/.475 slash lines in his future. Kid can really hit. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat!! What's your analysis of Nick Castellanos this season??
(DJ from Detroit)
You're welcome! I think he will continue to improve as he gets more reps under his belt and end the season with 15-17 HRs, 65ish RBIs, and a .275 AVG (Paul Sporer)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)If you had to cast the Star Wars movies with only Tigers players, who would you cast as who?
(TJ from West Africa)
Usually, I'm better with pokemon comparisons. Alex Gonzalez is yoda. Wait, he's not there anymore.. hmm. Phil Coke is Darth Vader. Nick Castellanos is Luke Skywalker. Joba is Jabba the Hutt (way too easy). (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos or Gregory Polanco?
(The Dude from Couch)
For 2014, Castellanos. Long-term, Polanco. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the opinion coming out of spring training re the ability of Nick Castellanos to play third adequately?
(Tommy Tiger from Motown)
I haven't seen anything positive about his defense. Dude can hit though. Lots of opposite-field hits from what I've seen. You know he's gonna grow into more power, too. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)5x5 roto, 30 team dynasty: making a move into contention, I traded Nick Castellanos, Tony Cingrani & Eduardo Rodriguez for Adam Jones, Bronson Arroyo & Bartolo Colon. Thoughts? It turned out to be rather divisive on the league message boards. FWIW, Castellanos was blocked at 3B by Matt Carpenter and my OF is now potentially the best in the league (Harper, Jones & Billy Hamilton)
(birdzfan52 from Baltimore)
Seems like you dealt strength for weakness. Did you get perfect value? I'm not qualified to say ... That's a far deeper league than I've ever been in, so it's hard for me to know what the value of Colon, Arroyo, etc. carry. Craig Goldstein said it was fine though, so I'm inclined to trust him.

I think there's some shock value because you traded young for old (excepting Jones) but, speaking from my experiences, prospects get overvalued in keeper leagues. You're trying to win now, so you made a win-now trade. I get it. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos has absolutely been on fire this spring. What type of contribution do you think he makes this year for the Tigers?
(Jason from Kentucky)
I think he'll be a slightly above-average player overall, hitting better than most third basemen in the league but with slightly below average defense. Not expecting a ton of home run power just yet, but it'll come. He's going to rack up some doubles this year though. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Is Nick Castellanos going to hit enough in 2014 to be the starting third baseman on an AL-only team in a 10-team league?
(Henry from Detroit)
Hi Henry

In a format that deep, Castellanos will hit enough to be a starter. I don't see him as a top option this year, but you can start him comfortably. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)I just traded for Bogaerts & Castellanos. Can I view them as my starting SS/3B combo, and feel good about it if studly at other positions?
(Team Theo from Chitown)
I think that's solid, and if you're "studly" at other positions you shouldn't worry too much. There's always risk with rookies of course, but I think both Bogaerts and Nick Castellanos stick this year. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul! I know you love talking Tigers and I'm a fan myself. My question is what do you think the backup plan is in the event that Nick Castellanos fails or gets hurt playing third base? Will it be an internal replacement or will they be forced to go out and sign or trade for someone?
(Aidan from SoCal)
They'd probably just rotate some D-first (D-only?) guys like Kelly, Lombo, and Worth. They might get into the trade market if it really failed miserably and they needed the offense. (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)A fantasy question - I am in dire need of quality SP and have been offered Matt Moore for Manny Machado. As much as I love Manny, I also have Nick Castellanos to be my 3B ... yeah, he may not have Manny's upside but Moore could be a long-term ace/co-ace of my staff for years to come. Both are signed for $5 with $3 annual incremental increases. Am I crazy to consider this? Thanks
(Tony from The tundra)
I don't believe in Matt Moore as a future ace, so give me the studliness of Manny Machado. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm a bit concerned about Nick Castellanos chance of sticking at third. You've been down on his defense in the past and know that system as well as anyone. Can he at least be as good as Miggy at the hot corner?
(Roger from Michigan)
He will be better than what Cabrera provided defensively at the end of last year when he was hurt, that's for certain. It will take some work and continued development for him to be better than what Cabrera provided when he was healthy, which in spite of the jokes, wasn't all that bad. I think he ends up a fringe-average defender at third and if he hits, they'll let him stay there. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Predict Nick Castellanos stats this year.
(sportznut from Clinton Township, MI)
I'll go with .270, 14 bombs, 30+ doubles if he stays in the lineup all season. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm looking at three third basemen on my team, and they all have question marks for the upcoming season: Mike Moustakas, Xander Bogaerts, and Nick Castellanos. What are your thoughts on these three for 2014 and beyond? Do I need to try to get someone more experienced by opening day?
(Jim from Detroit)
I don't think you need more experience. Bogaerts is going to be valuable immediately, and I believe in Castellanos' bat as well. I'm not a Moustakas fan, but with that amount of depth at/near the major leagues I think you're ok. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)How much does Nick Castellanos' fantasy value improve with the news that he's going back to 3B? Wondering how to value him in a dynasty league.
(Chris from Dallas, TX)
First and foremost, check your league's eligibility rules. In my leagues, Nick Castellanos is eligible at outfield only because that's where he played in 2013 in the minors. Long term you are correct though; Castellanos' value is helped by the move to third base. I do like him but I don't feel like he's a monster, and down the road 20-25 home runs at his peak are more likely than 30-35. He is very young though, so obviously there are a lot of different outcomes. His ceiling is likely as a 5th round player in a standard mixed league, or a $20-25 player in deep auction formats. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Nick Castellanos working out for the Tigers this year, or will they need to go find a replacement at third?
(Henry from Detroit)
I think he'll be the guy. I was going to say typically don't need as much offense to make it work out there as in left field. But last year, left fielders and third basemen had identical .735 OPS figures MLB-wide. I think Castellanos will be fine and they can upgrade elsewhere if they want to spend again. (Zachary Levine)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think any top 20 prospects will be traded this offseason? Who would be the most likely to be traded?
(Tony from MN)
There aren't a lot of guys in what I would project to be the Top 20 discussion that I think get fllipped this off-season. The most likely candidate could be the Tigers Nick Castellanos. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were comparing the "Hit" tool only, which three current prospects project to have the best in MLB?
(Jim from San Diego)
Oscar Taveras, Byron Buxton, and I'll say Nick Castellanos because I really believe in his feel for the barrel. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Let's say Chicago or Detroit called saying they want my players and are willing to offer prospects. Who should I ask for? Both farm systems I think stink.
(Kevin from Houston )
Considering you can't yet ask for this year's draft picks, the pickings are going to be pretty slim. From Detroit, the obvious answer is Nick Castellanos, but you could also be intrigued by players like Endrys Briceno, Drew VerHagen, Brian McCann, and Steven Moya. From the White Sox you can look at Courtney Hawkins, despite what Mortimer says, and I still believe in Trayce Thompson a little bit. (Mark Anderson)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Mike- assuming Castellanos gets called up soon and plays, how would you rank him, A-Rod and Michael Young? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
I would rank Nick Castellanos ahead of Young and slightly behind Alex Rodriguez. Castellanos has a high ceiling but there are a lot of directions he could go ROS. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Are concerns about his defensive readiness what's keeping Nick Castellanos in AAA? I know he's had some struggles at the plate as well over the last month or so, but the unicorns and rainbows surrounding the Matt Tuiasasopo/Andy Dirks experiment are going to fade away sooner rather than later, especially if (when) they lose Peralta from the lineup.
(Jeff from Michigan)
Castellanos is simply not a good defender. All of his value is in his bat, but I agree he will either be traded or given the shot to help the big league team in the near future. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Nick Castellanos? Hard to imagine Andy Dirks is blocking him, so I have to think they're thinking about trading him and want to leave him in the minors to preserve his value. What do you think?
(James from Detroit)
Sometimes I think the Tigers' idea of chemistry is making sure the left fielder sucks. I don't know why that would work, but they have access to information I don't! (Sam Miller)
2013-07-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)By the end of this month will Nick Castellanos be playing LF in Detroit or 3B on someone else's major league roster?
(Chase from NYC)
I find still with the Tigers organization much more likely, whether or not he'll be in the majors any time soon, I am not sure. (Zachary Levine)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please tell me the Tigers aren't going to trade Nick Castellanos for a closer.
(Jim from Detroit)
If they do, he'll probably flop, LOL. #Maybin #Miller (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)How far appart are you on Wil Myers and Nick Castellanos? I don't feel the gap is all that great and Castellanos is a year younger raking at AAA!
(Hector from Detroit)
I'm not sure there is a gap. I find Myers somewhat overrated to be honest. I see him as a Nick Swisher (which is very good and if he meets that ceiling, it's a tremendous success), but the perception seems to be far higher. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos has 2 more hits today through six innings at AAA Toledo. When do Tigers fans get to stop suffering through Andy Dirks at bats in favor of their top prospect?
(Jim from Detroit)
If Dirks doesn't heat up, I could see the move being made within a couple of weeks. That said, sweeping the Indians to gain some breathing room might allow the Tigers to give Castellanos a bit more seasoning. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)As a Tiger fan, nice to see Nick Castellanos's recent run.How is the conversion to LF going and do you ever see him moving back to 3B.Also,very encouraging to see Harold Castro's start in the FSL.Should I temper my enthusiasm and what do you see in Castro's future?
(Chad from Florida)
The transition to left field has been slow for Castellanos. He has spurts where he looks like he has figured things out and then follows that up with stretches where he looks pretty brutal out there still. Ultimately, I think he ends up an average outfielder and I don't think the Tigers have any intention of moving him back to third base. As for Castro, his success in High-A has been a very nice surprise. The kid can flat out hit the baseball. I would temper your enthusiasm a bit, as I'm still not cnvinced he will spend the rest of the year there. If he starts to struggle, he could head to the NYPL to get on a more standard developmental track. He's got some interesting tools aside from his hitting ability, with some gap power, decent speed and some projection with the glove. The second base only profile that he currently holds is a tough one to fulfill from the complex leagues all the way to the Majors, but he's going to be fun to follow. (Mark Anderson)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Nick Castellanos becoming an impact bat in the outfield? I assume he should drop in prospect rankings a bit now that he's been moved off 3B permanently.
(Frank from Detroit)
I still like the bat. I see a lot of natural feel for hitting in his swing, and I think that will eventually play at the highest level. I think the power is there. I think its going to take time for everything to come together, but he has impact potential. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Nick Castellanos gets called up Det this year? Is he a .300 avg. 20-25 HR player?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Probably gets a look this year. I'd say that's about his offensive ceiling, yeah. He's off to a decent start in Triple-A, and I'm looking forward to seeing if the game power continues to build as he gets more comfortable there. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Avisail Garcia, who do you think gets the call to the majors first, Garcia or Nick Castellanos? Will Detroit wait for an injury, or just promote one of them when they think they're ready?
(Jon from Detroit)
Castellanos is scuffling a bit at the higher levels, and his breakout at Lakeland is drifting further into the rearview mirror. The MLB roster is pretty loaded and the Tigers sit in a weak division, but Andy Dirks is not blocking anybody in LF. I say that Garcia gets there first, but that Castellanos wins the job once he is ready. A competitive team like Detroit has less incentive to play games with the arb clock, but in this case the promotion will be tied to performance. Castellanos has to earn his role. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-04-25 12:30:00 (link to chat)What type of ceiling does Nick Castellanos have? Typcical RF-type, or less power?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Castellanos scouting report from today's Minor League Update, courtesy of Zach Mortimer: "hit tool could reach plus-plus level; plus power potential; fringy reads on balls in the outfield; developing pitch recognition; arm is easy plus; great makeup." You should all be reading the MLU if you're interested in prospects, by the way. Zach has really made it his own. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Nick Castellanos is up and starting at some point this year for the TIgers?
(Wes from Texas)
Forget about him until next year, or at the earliest, September. (Paul Singman)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, Do you still feel Nick Castellanos will be a 3rd baseman in the future or does he project well at a corner outfield spot ? thanks
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
I think he's going to end up in the outfield. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Help! Get to keep two of the following: Jose Fernandez; Mike Olt; Mike Zunino; Nick Castellanos; Xander Bogaerts. Thank you.
(nictaclacta from Phoenix)
I *really* like Fernandez, but he's 20 who hasn't passed High-A yet. I have to go with Olt and flip a coin between Bogaerts and Casty, probably leaning Bogy because of SS. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you value a guy like Nick Castellanos, who can play all over the diamond? Do you knock him because he isn't a SS or a CF, or do you give him a bonus due to versatility (like Ben Zobrist)?
(ttt from Manhattan)
I'm not sure Castellanos can play all over the diamond. He could probably stick around at third if he focuses on it, and either corner will be options, but he's not a middle-of-the-diamond defender. I knock every player if they can't play up-the-middle. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which pure hitting prospect blossoms into the better overall player: Wil Myers, Oscar Taveras, Nick Castellanos?
(Kai from SLO)
Oscar Taveras. (Chris Mellen)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Peter Bourjos for Nick Castellanos; who hangs up first?
(Tyson from Chicago)
I think it could be reasonably discussed, but ideally the Tigers would shift focus back to Porcello and look to play that angle. (Paul Sporer)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Any prospects that have really moved up the rankings this year that you are excited about?
(Jerome from Holding pattern)
No problem. Thanks for reading. Yes; lots of prospects have jumped up the rankings. Guys like Alen Hanson, Nick Castellanos, Zach Wheeler, and Jose Fernandez have taken big steps forward. They are climbing the prospect tiers... (Jason Parks)
2012-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Isn't Machado going to exhaust his "prospect" status?
(Chris from KC)
Probably; if he does, one of Nick Castellanos, Jose Fernandez, Byron Buxton, or Travis d'Arnaud takes his place. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos tore up the FSL to the tune of a .400+ average before his recent call-up to AA. With that said, he only hit 3Hrs, while in the FSL. I know he's only 20 years old, but I'm surprised by the lack of power. Do you think he will eventually develop above average power to profile enough for 3B?
(Short Shorts from Venice Beach)
Yes. Power is derivative of the hit tool, and we all know Castellanos can rake. His swing doesn't have a ton of loft to it, but as he continues to mature as a hitter, I'm certain he will add more over-the-fence power to his game. He's going to be a very good hitter. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which guy that isn't a Top 50 prospect right now has the best chance to be a Top 20 by season's end, in your opinion?
(AznAlan from Toronto)
Nick Castellanos is quickly usurping Matt Dominguez as my 3B mancrush du jour, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him ranked among the game's elite prospects after this year. He isn't likely to hit 25 home runs spending his summer in the Florida State League, but scouts I've talked to think he's starting to learn how to tap into his natural strength. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does the power begin to develop this year for Nick Castellanos?
(Mike from Utica, NY)
I think it will start to tease, but it won't fully erupt until Castellanos reaches Double-A (Jason Parks)
