2003 The Phillies made many bizarre moves in 2002, but putting Hollins on the 40-man roster was by far the most indefensible. His production certainly didn’t justify it, and his tough guy act only served to infuriate people in the clubhouse.
2000 He doesn't have a position, and he hasn't hit well enough to DH since 1993. When even ex-Phillie friend Jim Fregosi won't keep him around as a crony, the end is nigh. Hollins is now a backup infielder who doesn’t hit much and doesn’t play the middle infield. Dave, the password is...“Amway”.
1999 Plan C for the Angels involves trading Garret Anderson or Jim Edmonds, moving Darin Erstad to center field and playing Hollins at first base. That is, if they don't sign Mo Vaughn. Hollins would be among the three worst-hitting first basemen in the league, so for their sake let's hope they sign Mo. Hollins is signed cheaply, and worth keeping on the roster as insurance for Glaus, and to play against people like Orlando Hernandez.
1998 That .273 EQA is made more remarkable by Hollins’ diabetes. I have a lot of respect for someone who can manage a disease than requires full-time attention and structured care, while being successful in a profession that provides no consistency of schedule. Hollins’ defensive problems are all in his arm; he fields third base well, but rushes throws, bringing him down from above average to slightly below.
1997 There are some things Hollins doesn’t do well. He’s never hit for a great average and he has a reputation for being less than fluid at third base. But he has terrific secondary skills and his defense is better than advertised. After he was made the scapegoat for the Phillies’ problems in 1995, he rubbed some members of the front office the wrong way. That’s all behind him now. Fragile as a Ming vase, but a really valuable player when he’s in the lineup. He signed a two-year deal with Anaheim, and will see time at both corners and DH.
1996  One of the game's most infamous red asses, it will be interesting to see what kind of effect Hollins has on the generally laid-back Twins. He's an awful defensive player at either corner, and a series of wrist injuries have cut deeply into his power. A team has to accept his limitations and not expect that he hit like he did in '92 and '93.
