BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Enduring the sophomore slump to end all sophomore slumps, Buchanan would surely love to pretend 2015 never happened. If there is something to build on, however, it would likely be found in his final four starts of the season, each with two or fewer runs allowed despite their relative brevity. Everything prior to that, from the 8.76 April ERA to the severe ankle sprain in Triple-A to the negative-12 Game Score in a mid-August outing in Arizona, held little light. Buchanan wasn't expected to be more than Most Likely to be Serviceable in the yearbook of Phillies starting pitching, but his regression was still a bit disheartening, as it's tough to root against the success of one of the few pitchers going today who could be labeled a “crafty righty.” Indeed, that's Buchanan's A game: He aims to keep hitters off-balance and off the barrel with a cutter and curve to offset a modest fastball that doesn't move a ton. He needs a reliable defense and he needs sharp command to be successful, and for most of 2015, he had neither. He'll get another shot to win an Opening Day roster job in the rotation's back end—as he did in 2015 with some particularly impressive work in Florida—and it will be difficult to go anywhere but up.
2015 Buchanan, who had always been well below the prospect radar, was one of maybe three or four bright spots on the Phillies' 2014 DVD. None of his secondary stuff makes for pretty GIFs, and the 89-91 mph fastball from the right side leaves him thin margins. But his gallimaufry does have two points in its favor: All five pitches he throws get average or better groundball rates; and the 10 mph difference between his fastball and changeup makes the latter a swing-and-miss pitch. Getting to the secondary pitches is the trouble, as he allowed the 10th highest OPS on fastballs in baseball. It's a fourth or fifth starter's profile, but he should eat plenty of innings for a rebuilding club.
