2014-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! You guys are the best!! What's your analysis of Rougned Odor? I know his production isn't great, but most guys his age are in Lo A ball. Does he have any long term fantasy value??
(DJ from Dallas)
Odor is going to be fine. He's going to hit, and hit a lot. Rangers probably rushed him just slightly (or did they really?) so I am not worried about a 20 year old going through his lumps in his rookie season.

Put this in perspective: Jonathan Schoop is two years older and struggling much more than Odor is. (Tucker Blair)
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Jonathan Schoop starting in the majors this year? Do you think this is temporary until Machado is back or he will be up for the long haul?
(Rob from Baltimore)
I think he's going to win their second base job, partly because he's good and partly because his competition for the spot is just so freaking terrible. He needs more time in the minors but probably won't get much of it. His ability to be a backup at SS and 3B are perhaps his most valuable assets. Another super utility type I like for that reason.

Don't envy you being in Baltimore in the snow, by the way. Lived downtown in Federal Hill during the back-to-back 30-inch storms we got in 2010 (?). Didn't move my car for almost two weeks. Luckily I could walk to Magerks. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)In a 12 team dynasty 2 round prospect draft, I'm looking at taking a 2B. Which one will help more down the road: Eddie Rosario, Jonathan Schoop, or Mookie Betts?
(fsumagic from TX)
Rosario will likely be the best hitter of the bunch but I dunno if he sticks at 2B. I'll go with Schoop here. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)The Orioles announced Jonathan Schoop will start 2013 in AAA. Does that mean their opening day 2B will be Jemile Weeks, or will they go get someone else?
(Jim from Baltimore)
It is probably going to come down to Ryan Flaherty or Jemile Weeks at second base, although it is possible that the Orioles do make a move to bring in a second baseman. Even if it isn't a big name, there could be an NRI or minor league free agent who comes into camp to compete for the job. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you order these middle infielders? Jonathan Schoop, Arismendy Alcantera, Rossell Herrera, Mookie Betts
(ORWahoo from Tigard)
Schoop, Alcantara, Betts, Herrera (Jason Parks)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these first-year 2b in order of who will have the best career? Kolten Wong, Scooter Gennett, Nick Franklin, Chris Owings, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Schoop, Marcus Semien, Grant Green. Thank you.
(The Kernel from Pasadena)
Wong, Owings, Franklin, Schoop, Gennett, Semien, Flores, Green. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Will Johnathan Schoop be the Orioles everyday 2B next year? Do you see him as an eventual top-10 fantasy guy at the position?
(Jim from Baltimore)
Hi Jim

I can't predict whether or not Schoop will be the Orioles 2B next year, but I do think that he'll get an opportunity in camp. Brian Roberts is a free agent, and Alexi Casilla and Ryan Flaherty shouldn't be viewed as road blocks. I suspect the Orioles will bring in a cheap veteran as a back-up plan in Spring Training and let them compete.

Will Jonathan Schoop be a Top 10 guy? That all depends on how his power develops. He probably will eventually be Top 10, but given his age and the minor league numbers he has put up to date, I don't see this happening until 2017-2018. These players play different positions, but I think you have to look at players like Brett Lawrie and Eric Hosmer as examples. Everyone got too enthusiastic about Lawrie/Hosmer and got burned the last couple of years. That doesn't mean these players aren't good and won't get better, but it's a long learning curve, particularly if you're not a made-to-order superstar like Mike Trout or Schoop's teammate, Manny Machado. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Jonathan Schoop win the Orioles 2B job next year?
(A Sockmonkey from Baltimore)
I think it is possible, but I also firmly believe he could use half a season in the minor leagues to continue polishing his offensive game. He has work to do with pitch recognition and consistent hard contact. A half a season in Triple-A could help accomplish that and he could then come up and make a difference in the second half. (Mark Anderson)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Between the AFL and WBC Jonathan Schoop started getting more prospect hypelove (though I most enjoyed the struggle to say his last name). Does he take 2B in Baltimore next season?
(JoeTetreault from Carrollton, TX)
His last name is pronounced" Scope, like telescope. He's a good player. He might be ready to challenge for a major league job in 2014, although I think 3B will be his best position. He can stick it at the plate. Might have some holes on the inside, but once gets extended he can do some damage. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi, Jason. Good work to you and BP in strengthening the prospect coverage. Future is looking good. Can you compare/contrast 2B prospects Jonathan Schoop and Rougned Odor? Seems like the shine is off of Schoop a bit after a subpar season, numbers-wise. What have you heard from scouts about what the numbers might not be telling us? He was young for that level so I'm hoping the numbers are not a huge red flag. Similarly, do you like what you are seeing/hearing about Odor?

Very different players. Schoop has good size and an impressive physical quality about him. I think he could develop into an average offensive player, and maybe develop a little more pop than expected. Odor is a Gestalt prospect, with his overall grade being more impressive than any individual tool. He is a Placido Polanco type, with good actions/range at 2B, and a quick bat capable of line-drive pop. He's a major league regular for me. I would take him over Schoop. (Jason Parks)
