DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Is Ramiel Tapia the next Gregory Polanco?
(Scott from Philly)
No. Different physical profiles. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a better fantasy career, George Springer or Gregory Polanco? In a roto dynasty league with OPS
(hamsterjockey from DC)
Polanco, but I think it will be close in that format. Springer's power will decide in my opinion. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)David Wright, Mike Minor, James Shields, Gregory Polanco for Paul Goldschmidt, George Springer and Dellin Betances. Would you make this move or is it not enough for Goldy?
(Jimbo from LA)
This is bordering on too many moving parts but I think this is fair, unless you suddenly find yourself in need of starting pitchers. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gregory Polanco hitting in the lead off spot will impact his power production in the short terms? Or perhaps even his overall power development? It seems that hitting lead off could potentially change his in game approach and subsequently impact his power.
(Frank from Pitt)
I doubt it, and I wouldn't worry. Polanco's power hasn't fully developed yet, so leadoff is where he fits best right now, and the Pirates lack a true leadoff hitter, so it's a good pairing. I doubt Polanco is doing anything different in his approach to at-bats right now, however, so I don't think there's any long-term effects. Far too much is made about where hitters hit in the lineup and the way it affects their approach. Just go up there and do what you do best, which I'm sure is what Clint Hurdle told him, and it seems to be working pretty well so far. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi JP, What would it take in prospects for the Pirates to pry David Price away? and do you see the Bucs pulling that trigger given their present place in the standings?
(Sweet Lou from Pittsburgh)
I don't see Pittsburgh making this move whatsoever, but they'd probably work something surrounding Glasnow and Josh Bell. I'm not even sure Tampa would want to make such a deal, as they're not close enough to the bigs. If I'm TB and Pittsburgh came calling, I'd demand Gregory Polanco and stick to it. (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Better in MLB in 2014- Gregory Polanco or Oscar Taveras?
(Shawn from Cubicle)
I'm such a sucker for Taveras. Don't get me wrong, I love Polanco, and he's major league ready right now. If there weren't arb concerns, he'd be up. The bat is going to be impact, too. However, Taveras could come out and hit .300/.400/.500 the second he's a Cardinal. He needs a new challenge. The bat is truly special, and he's got the chance to be one of the best hitters in baseball for a long, long time. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How good can Gregory Polanco be?
(Mike from Pittsburgh)
This isn't my future brother-in-law Mike is it?

Polanco is going to be very good. Closer to Cutch than Marte, to put it in Pirates terms. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Obligatory Gregory Polanco question- just your best, wild guess- is he up before Super 2?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I don't think so. It's sort of like the Wil Myers situation last year: Yeah, it stinks that they can't bring up their top prospect, but they have to weigh the future, too. How much is four or five weeks of Polanco worth to that team as it stands? (R.J. Anderson)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm looking for a RF for a dynasty league. I have Pence, but I'm looking to get younger. I can probably get Gregory Polanco, but Taveras would be a much bigger get. Is Taveras likely to play RF, or some other OF position? What's the likely playing time scenario for both he & Polanco?
(Jonah from Redwood)
It wouldn't surprise me if Taveras plays some center field when he arrives. Unless the Cardinals find a new position for Allen Craig (or he or Adams is hurt) I'm not sure how else they'll get them all into the lineup. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)How good can Gregory Polanco be?
(Steve from New Mexico)
EXCELLENT - a beastly power-speed combo on the level of his teammate in centerfield. Of course, remember that Cutch had to develop the power over time, but the speed and AVG were there immediately. (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)I know that there isn't an exact date, but when is Prospect Christmas, the Super 2 Deadline? Who shall we see in the bigs soon after?
(Chris from MA)
Late May/Early June usually, I believe. I bet you see Gregory Polanco up right around then. Perhaps Archie Bradley too. I would've said Taillon and Sano, but sadface. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the Brewers hot start, do you think the Pirates call up Gregory Polanco sooner than Super 2 deadline?
(Shawn from Cubicle)
I don't know that they'd react to another team like that (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather have on your fantasy team for this season Gregory Polanco or Oscar Taveras?
(Rob from York, PA)
This year Polanco has surpassed Taveras in our minds; Polanco has the clearer path and fewer concerns about injuries and playing time. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeff, Thanks for the chat. Two questions. First, who's getting called up next? Second, who are we not talking about that we should be?
(Number27 from Milwaukee, WI)
I was as surprised as anybody that George Springer got called up when he did, though Iíd guess it means that theyíre closer to a contract extension than either side is letting on. I just donít see the Astros giving up the service time like that for the sake of about one win between now and June in what will be another losing season. Iím thrilled heís up, but it doesnít make much sense.

Because of that, I have no idea whoís next. Some of the most obvious candidates Ė Javy Baez, Byron Buxton, Taijuan Walker, and Addison Russell for example, have battled injuries. There are some more obvious candidates like Marcus Stroman, Andrew Heaney, Gregory Polanco and others, but Iíll bet most teams wait until the super-two deadline has safely passed.

Then again, who saw a Luis Sardinas promotion happening over the weekend? So who knows. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco is hitting .406/.449/.625 in AAA (64 AB's), is there any reason he wouldn't be an immediate upgrade in RF once the Super 2 date passes?
(Dave from Pittsburgh from Boston)
Yeah, Polanco is red hot. Theoretically he should be an immediate upgrade. It doesn't always work that way for prospects, but even if he doesn't hit right away, he should still be about as productive as the Travis Snider/Jose Tabata cluster the Pirates have going on right now, and he's a better defender. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco - top 20 outfielder by the end of the season?
(Kevin from St Louis)
At the major league level? That's a bit aggressive. (Jason Parks)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Castellanos or Gregory Polanco?
(The Dude from Couch)
For 2014, Castellanos. Long-term, Polanco. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kolten Wong, ready to live up to expectations, recieves 500 at bats in St. Louis Gregory Polanco up in the Burgh by mid April? Tyler Glasnow up late this season? Thanks for the chat, regardless if you get to this question, always enjoy the knowledge as you answer any question in general
(Dragonbreath from Gurnee, IL)
Just to break these up a little:

Wong should be fine, but the playing time estimate might be on the optimistic side. It wouldn't shock me if they platoon him with Mark Ellis, at least early on.

I doubt Polanco is up before mid-June. The Pirates have every financial reason to play the Super Two game with him. As with Glasnow, I'd lean toward not this year. You figure Jameson Taillon is in line ahead of him, and likely Nick Kingham as well. Add in some of the other bit arms the Pirates have, and I just don't see a clear path to the majors for him this season. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco - a top 20 of by seasons end?
(Cory from Albany)
In fantasy? Probably. The big question with him is when he'll fulfill his power potential. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco - a top 20 outfielder by the end of the season?
(Jon from New Jersey)
That's pretty aggressive. We've been spoiled by young standouts of late, but it's still a rarity to take the league by storm like that so I'll say no. I'm a huge fan, though. Been taking him in deeper mixers with a reserve so I don't mind waiting for him as I did with G.Cole last year. (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)How soon will Gregory Polanco be called up? Who would you compare his potential to?
(Eddie from California)
Probably depends partly on Tabata's ability to hold the fort. If Polanco waxes AAA, Tabata is meh, and the Pirate offense isn't clicking, we could see GP by May 1st. I think he's going to be similar to Marte with the big speed and solid power. Overall, I like Polanco ahead of Marte in '15 and beyond, but initially they will look quite similar which is great for Pittsburgh! (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco - Worth picking up now? when is he called up?
(Ryan from NY)
Really depends on league format, of course. And impossible to know when he'll be called up. Even the prospectiest of prospect mavens don't know, so I don't stand a chance on knowing. :) It all depends on the team situation... performances, injuries. Do a Ctrl-F for Polanco as I discussed him a bit earlier in this chat, too. I'm a fan! (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)With the not-so surprising news that both Oscar Taveras and Gregory Polanco start out in the minors, do either amass 250 AB's this season?
(mprzybylo from Fort Myers)
It's a good possibility for both. I don't see Travis Snider or Jose Tabata as a particularly tough obstacle for Polanco and while Taveras seems blocked, he's one of those prospects where the team will find a place for him when he's ready. (Mike Gianella)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)In the same vein as the Springer/Taveras questions-- who are some guys you think will start the year in the minors but would be worth drafting in a 12-team roto keeper league?
(Dave from DC)
If Nick Franklin doesn't get traded and gets optioned, he's an obvious choice. He'll be up at some point and the questions about the glove don't matter as much to us. I mentioned him earlier, but Gregory Polanco is an interesting reserve gamble in this format. Getting guys like this in a 12-team mixed is kind of risky. I know you need keeps, but you're wasting spots sometimes on guys who never make it. Billy Hamilton and Oscar Taveras seemed like great guys like this to gamble on last year and did nothing. Unless they're top of the pops prospects, I tend to avoid these plays in a standard mixer. (Mike Gianella)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for doing the chat, Mauricio. Could you rank these OF based on offensive production five years from now - Christian Yelich, Gregory Polanco, Albert Almora, Clint Frazier, David Dahl.
(Luke from Schenectady)
Yellich - Frazier - Dahl - Almora - Polanco, but I think it's tight. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)So basically I'm in a conundrum. My fantasy league allows you to hold 5 minor leaguers. Background info is that I have one of the strongest teams in the league, with exceptional hitting and very good pitching. The minor leaguers I own so far are Javier Baez, Miguel Sano, and Addison Russell. However I'm unsure of what to do with my last 2 spots. Based on how I know the draft will play out I can go a couple different directions... -Draft Gregory Polanco and Archie Bradley -Draft 2 longer ETA prospects (Frazier, Giolito, Dahl) so I don't have potentially 5 minor leaguers coming up this summer and forcing me to cut 5 guys from my competitive 28 man roster - Draft 2 SPs to balance out my team (Bradley, Giolito, Gray, Syndergaard)
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk PA)
I'd go with Polanco and Bradley followed by Synder, Gio, Gray, Dahl, and Frazier (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)What do you expect out of Gregory Polanco? Both this season and over the course of his career?
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk PA)
I like Polanco a lot. Potential five-category fantasy contributor who should see the majors in mid-late 2014 and will ascend from there. If we're talking about him as a top-50 fantasy player in his prime I won't be surprised in the least. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)I have 5 dynasty league minor league slots, the first 4 are filled by Javier Baez, Miguel Sano, Kris Bryant, and Gregory Polanco. Who should I choose for my last spot between Clint Frazier and Jorge Alfaro?
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk PA)
I have them ranked fairly closely to one another. I'll say Frazier, but barely. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Hello, Where would you place Gregory Polanco in with 2013 draftees and free agents like Tanaka and Abreu?
(shakyhands from NJ)
Polanco is behind Tanaka but ahead of Jose Abreu. All that's lacking for Polanco is the power, but even if it doesn't come you're looking at a pretty damn fine player. This is a long term, dynasty answer. This year I'd go Tanaka, Abreu, Polanco. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco tearing up winter ball. Parks seems mixed on him and the hit tool. What do you see and hear from scouts?
(Sean from Gettysburg)
I'm a big fan. I've heard nothing but good things from firsthand accounts, but I have read some of the mixed reviews, too. The speed/avg combo is very appetizing from a fantasy standpoint and if the emerging pop is anything close to real, then look out! (Paul Sporer)
2013-12-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco just won the Dominican League MVP. What kind of player do you see for PIT in the future?
(Terry from Pittsburgh)
I love Polanco. I have visions of Marte/Cutch/Polanco dancing in my head and they're wonderful. I expect him to be a quality regular after a little more time in the minors. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Gregory Polanco ultimately become the regular center or rightfielder for the Bucs?
(Paul from DC)
Does he or should he? He probably should, and is the best center fielder of him, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte (which is incredibly high praise), but he wonít push Cutch out of center anytime soon. Thatís what winning an MVP will do for you, and Cutch isnít exactly a slouch out there. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Looking for a RF in dynasty: Gregory Polanco and Kris Bryant both available. Preference?
(Jonah from Redwood)
If it needs to be a RF, go with Polanco. If you want the better fantasy player, go Bryant. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, Is Gregory Polanco a top 10 prospect? What sort of slash line do you see at his peak? What about counting stats?
(dbrosene from San Mateo, CA)
Not top 10 for me. Case for top 25, but I'm not fully committed to that yet. I like the potential, but I also have some concerns about the swing and the holes that can be exploited by major league quality arms. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Just saw some video of Gregory Polanco in the Dominican winter ball league. The dude is huge. Looks like a beast. What are your thoughts on his future?
(Joe from Richmond)
corner outfielder playing every day seems like a reasonable target. He could hit his way to the majors some time in 2014. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)More less LABR settings, thinking of trading one year of $7 Matt Moore and one year of Alex Cobb at $2, for three years of $7 Gregory Polanco. Worth it?
(Roy Munson from 1978 Iowa state bowling champ)
I'd keep the two starters. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Every time I've watched Gregory Polanco play, I can't help but see a young Felix Pie. Polanco seems to have a similar build and Tool set to PIe when he was a prospect. Am I wrong? I hope so...
(Bill from Florida)
I think Polanco has a better feel for the game than Pie did, and this coming from someone that was slow to come on Polanco in 2012. When I saw him at the end of 2012, he surprised with his feel for the game, how well he took to instruction and how well he adjusted to what pitchers were doing against him. Those are not necessarily things Pie did well. That gives Polanco an extreme edge in avoding the same fate as Pie. I'm a believer in Polanco being an impact big leaguer. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What prospects do you think will have the most helium this offseason?
(Tony from MN)
It may seem odd to say, but Carlos Correa is going to blow up this winter, and by this time next year, he's going to be discussed with Byron Buxton as one of the two or three best prospects in the game. I think you're also going to hear a lot more noise on Gregory Polanco and the potential for him to help in Pittsburgh next year. Those guys are clearly already on the radar and likely not what you were looking for when you wrote the question, but I really believe both will be even more highly regarded on Opening Day than they are right now. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What comes to mind when I say Gregory Polanco?
(Terry from Lincoln)
I get excited. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco is from the DR yet his plate discipline would even make Billy Beane swoon, what gives? I thought all DR prospects were hackers.
(Dave from Pittsburgh)
Every industry is subject to stereotypes and hard cliches, and the baseball/scouting industry is no different. A lot of those stereotypes center around Latin American players, with long held beliefs like they're all hackers, most of them end up in the bullpen, etc. As bad as it may sound, it is hard to move beyond those sterotypes at times and when a super-talented player like Polanco defies one of those stereotypes, it makes people stand up and take notice. (Mark Anderson)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey JP, thanks for the chat. Who develops more power, Almora or Gregory Polanco?
(Jessica from LA)
Polanco will have more power (Jason Parks)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are Gregory Polanco's main weaknesses?
(Dave from Pittsburgh from Pittsburgh)
The weaknesses aren't glaring in Polanco's game. He is an impressive talent that has made massive strides over the last two years. He is still a little crude in most facets of the game, but that is to be expected as his age. He needs to maintain a short path to the zone, improve his pitch recognition and refine his overall defensive abilities, but those are pretty typical refinemens that most 21-year olds have to make as the reach the upper levels. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, STAR, percentage chance that Gregory Polanco develops into 20/20 player?
(Josh from Pennsylvania )
70% (Jason Parks)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Keeper lge: rank these please: Gregory polanco, Avisail Garcia
(Minor league guy from Lake villa, IL )
In a keeper league, it's Gregory Polanco and it's not particularly close. Polanco has 25-30 SB potential and could wind up being another Starling Marte for the Pirates. Garcia could be an OK power/speed guy, but I have some questions about what if he's ever going to steal enough for the fantasy side of the equation. Definitely Polanco for me. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)This was asked to Parks on his chat, but do you prefer Starling Marte or Gregory Polanco (aside from the fact Marte is already in MLB)?
(The Dude from Office)
I'll go on the opposite end for this. I prefer Gregory Polanco. I think that Polanco has the potential to be an All-Star Level player. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Recently read that Gregory Polanco could develop more power than Oscar Taveras. How do they compare?
(Jimmy from St Louis)
No. I don't think Polanco is in that league. Taveras has crazy raw power and the type of hit tool to let it all come to play. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco sneak into top 5 next year?
(eric from philly)
Highly unlikely. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any players who have basically come out of no where this year to the point where they are a top 50 type prospect? For example someone like Gregory Polanco last year.
(petelunchbox from Handsome City)
You could say perhaps Raul Adalberto Mondesi, coming off his short-season resume last season. Sonny Gray has done a very nice job of reclaiming his prospect status (if not even surpassing it out of college). (Jason Cole)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco has been tearing up the FSL. Must add in all keeper leagues?
(MickeyRivers from Philadelphia)
I have him in my NL keeper league. Bright future (Jason Collette)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Another guy really wants my Minor $11 and Gregory Polanco who would be $10 when activated for 3 yrs. Is Hart $29, Grandal $5 and McCarthy (non-keeper) enough of a return w/ me also adding in my 1st rd pick in yearly prospect draft? Or should I stick to trying to get Romo $11. Needs are saves and power.
(Tom from Boston)
If you need power, trading for a guy that isn't close to returning and another one shaking off rust will not help (Jason Collette)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco - more a dynamic table setter or #3 hitter?
(Ben from PA)
He's going to be better than people realize. The power is going to develop. He could be a middle-of-the-order talent. He's a big time prospect. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco have 25 HR potential?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I think he might. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Gregory Polanco had a nice comboination of HR/SLG with a relatively low K rate. Do you feel that gives him a better than average shot to have good in game power as he moves up the ladder?
(Joe from PA)
I think he's going to hit for power; it might take time, but the swing has power characteristics and he's strong. He's on the way up. (Jason Parks)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank David Dahl, Gregory Polanco, and Alen Hanson in a dynasty league that uses OBP, SLG, HR, RBI, SB+Runs, and a negative category for Total Errors Committed?
(Halo Fan from SoCal)
Hanson, Polanco, Dahl. Dahl has lots of potential, but need to see him hit in full season ball before I get more excited. (Bret Sayre)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am TOO a sociopath! Whenever a reporter asked if I did PED's, I accused him of being a racist, and attacking my *children* along with myself. I'm pathologically self-absorbed and dishonest, like Pete Rose. You underestimate what a rotten person I am. Q: Could Gregory Polanco be Trout-lite (i.e. .290 with 20-25 HR, 35 SB's, and average CF defense)?
(Barry Bonds from Not in jail)
I like Barry Bonds. I'd gladly put him on my team. He's an asshole. I get it. He's also one of the greatest baseball players in history. You have to be somewhat pathologically self-absorbed to reach that level.

Polanco will not be Trout-lite. He could develop into a first-division talent, but that's a long way away. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your feelings about Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson? Who has the better chance of reaching his respective ceiling? Also, do you see any other prospects making a jump like that in the Pirates system this coming year?
(Will from Rochester)
Both are legit prospects, although I'm not sold on Hanson at SS. Polanco, on the other hand, I can buy in CF. I'm not sure if I'd rank either player above Josh Bell, who I feel has the highest offensive ceiling of the three. Very close. All three are top ten guys in that system. (Jason Parks)
2012-08-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Gregory Polanco? Seems to be having a breakout season in Low-A. Do the reports match the numbers?
(Steve from Buco Land)
They do, in many ways. He's the kind of toolsy athlete you look for in a Low-A outfielder. (Kevin Goldstein)
